 make sure first that u actually truely like this girl cuz then ur also putting risks at ur friendship.. and i totally agree if the guys really takes u as a friend, and is a understanding guy.. i'm sure he'll be cul with that... and it'l help you..
but also remember don't mess up with the chic cuz then they'll be problems..

If you're friend is a nice understanding guy he may just put a good word in for you.
If you are sure you like this girl, I think its better to tell him beforehand or else he'll be upset that you didnt say.
