A female Mexico age 30-35, *arlamarpal writes:

Hi and thanks for reading, you don't know how scared i am at the point of trembling as i type these words.

The truth is my period started when i was 11 (about 9 years ago) but since about nine months or so i haven't had a single regular one. Since i didn't want to bother others i didn't tell anyone...and now i feel very very scared since one of my friends had an analysis and ended with several ovarian cysts...and her period has only gone absent for 5 months or so.

Now i am utterly scared and having these dreams in which i die in abnormal pain. As far as i've readed i don't have any symtom (like abdominal pain or so) but i'm started to get hairy due to hormone problems...and i'm nervous.

I feel that now i've told my family they don't really believe me, they even laughed at me and tried to change the conversation. I am getting a check-up this month but still i don't want to. I am scared i might end up with cancer or something critical....but i don't want to die this way, i don't want to.

Still...i feel ashamed if i bring so much unhappiness to my family (along with the costs for the check up and medicines) how i wish i was normal, but i am not and now i blame myself. I feel so alone, i feel very restless and i've been thinking a lot about my own death.

I just need some confort, i just need someone to tell me what to do! i could die tommorrow or now, any moment this fear is consuming me, slowly and making me so confused.

DrPsych agony auntThere is nothing to be scared of, but you do need a medical check. It is important to have periods regularly as it prevents a build up of the lining of the womb. This can lead to a condition called endometrial hyperplasia. The doctor can give you some progesterone tablets to get everything moving.

There are many reasons why you might not being having periods - hormonal, metabolic, stress. The ovarian cysts you write about are really nothing to be worried about - I have polycystic ovaries and it hasn't stopped me having a baby! It does require some treatment however. Go to a doctor and ask for some help.

Well since your hormones are out of whack...perhaps you're starting an early menopause? Typically, when women start menopause they grow more hair because their hormone levels are off since they aren't producing estrogen like they used to. I've heard of this happening (very rarely) to young women. Sorry, hope this doesn't scare you even more...but it sure is better than cancer! I think you should relax and find out what happens after your doctor appointment. I'm sure it just has to do with a hormonal imbalance.

As far as I can remember, I've always had irregular periods. Mine would come probably once every two months. There was one summer where it didn't come for about 3 months or so. About a year and a half ago, I started taking birth control pills and my periods have been coming "regularly" (if there is such a thing) ever since.

happyhello agony auntyou shouldnt blame yourself, its not like you did this on purpose. if you aren't showing any symptoms i wouldnt get too worried about it, lots of girls have irregular periods all the time. though i think its a good idea to see your GP about it anyway.
