How do I know when to give up on this guy?

I like this guy, and we've been in an on and off relationship for the past 4 years. I know the reason it didn'work out is because of how I acted. Now I think he;s moved on and is now dating my friend. Do you think I should just give up and move on? Or try and get him back?
