A male age 30-35, anonymous writes:

The negative opinion of black Africans and the negative reaction to to black people has me feeling bad about myself. I've been able to spend more time on the internet and increased social awareness has left me struggling to be happy with my race and culture. Even within my own country we are second class citizens and tribalism is rife.

I want to know how I can appreciate myself and be happy with who I am despite being faced with prejudiced, hatred, disgust and disrespect over who and what I am.

How can you be happy with yourself??? First...You woke up...That simple fact should be enough to make you happy. I am sure there are people out there in wheel chairs, or have cancer, or something way worst than black skin, who would trade your life for theirs anyday. You look at the few people around you and judge the world??. You could be the most beautiful, popular person on the planet, and people will still hate you. Guest what?? That is the world we live in, deal with it. I am also called black by ignorant people. I am actually chocolate brown...yes...that is what my white wife calls me. White people is another ignorant name, because no one has the skin colour of a cloud...unless you have some genetic disorder.

Be happy that you are alive, in good health, able to love, know the difference between right and wrong, and have the common sense to want to be a better person. People around may hate, does not mean you have to care or join them. Their is only one race...the human race...hate it or love, we are all part of it.

agneeman agony auntI come from South Africa, famous for racial history.

I think what has helped me.is travel. When I see people of my race be succesful and surround myself with them it helps.

And two sayings.keep me going:

1) You are more than the sum of the genes that created you

2) Racism.is citicism of God's creativity

A male reader, CMMP United States +, writes (22 December 2013):

Or you could be white and suffer from white guilt or feel that your race is boring or uncool.

You could be Asian and feel embarrassed of the math nerd, submissive, small manhood stereotypes thrown your way.

You could be Hispanic and feel bad about the image you feel your people have as illegal immigrants among other negative stereotypes.

You can get more specific and always find someone who doesn't like you and who labels you. These are the people that you shouldn't give a shit about because they are not worth your time and their opinion is formed out of ignorance, not knowledge.

Unless, of course, you agree with their negative opinions, then the situation is a lot more complicated.

By the way, the internet is a poor place to look for self esteem. Racists come out of the woodwork, because racism is not tolerated in the open very much anymore so they need an outlet. The anonymity of the Internet is perfect for them.

You must realize the source of this feeling is in your mind and nothing else. Ok I agree with you that there are some white folks who look down on the blacks but that doesn't mean they are right, coz they are not. There are some great achievers among the black people in the fields of sports and music. President Obama is probably one of the most respected and loved American presidents all over the world. The late president Nelson Mandela is probably one of the most inspiring persons in the human History.Probably you saw his funeral on TV how great it was.How many heads of states had come to pay him homage including 4 American presidents.Try to take inspiration from the great black men who have changed the destinies of their nations.Study hard, work hard,be a serious person and dedicate yourself to a cause. Don't pity yourself.Try to be successful. success is not easy. It needs a lot of hard work and dedication. Good luck.
