Hi...I need some advice. I recently just discovered that I am growing hairs on my chin!!!!! I keep plucking them, but its really beginning to freak me out and I am petrified that my boyfriend will see them and leave me.

Is this normal? or is there something hideously wrong with me? Has anyone had any experience with this, that can help me get rid of them?

Its beginning to take over my life...

A female reader, anonymous, writes (27 April 2010):

I have exactly the same problem. For some reason I get a collection of very thick black hairs which grow on my chin. I keep on top of them with tweezers which is not too bad, but they are a pain. Personally, I don't find it too much of a problem and my fiance doesn't really care. If I let them grow long then it wouldn't be nice at all, but a bit of extra grooming is fine. I also have a moustache which probably goes with the territory, and I alternate beteen waxing and bleaching with that. Don't worry too much, I'm sure you notice it far more than your boyfriend does anyway.

Also, your boyfriend won't leave you over this, don't worry. Put truly, I feel your pain!

Thankyou so much everyone. Its nice to know I am not the only one who suffers from this, but I still feel like a bit of a freak.

None of the other women I know appear to suffer this, as they are all perfectly preened with straight hair and nice skin. You cant imagine any of them having to remove hair from places it shouldnt be.

I am just scared he will see the other women who dont need to do this, and think they are more femanine and prettier than me.

Not My Name agony auntIf it is just a few hairs in a localized area I would seriously suggest you explore laser hair removal (laser - not the IPL - that is half arsed effective) or electrolysis to erradicate them permenantly.

Do a google search too check it out and find a beautician or clinic in your area. A small area like that may well be quite reasonable priced.

I have been looking in to home lasers coz I want to do my entire legs and that would be way too much at a clinic, and my research has concluded that the 'TRIA' brand is the closest to a professional machine and gives the best results. They are readily available in the UK if you want to look in to it.

They are around $1000 Au , so I guess that is about 300 pound UK (dont have the symbol on my k/b) and perhaps could even be a joint investment with a friend who would have use for it too.

Of course hair and skin color come in to play with rating effectiveness, ... but check em out anyway if it is a long term solution you want.

A female reader, samismiles United Kingdom +, writes (27 April 2010):

Don't panic, when I was about 12 I went swimming with friends, and at that impressionable age one of the boys we were with told us (the girls) we had hairy stomachs, so we all went home and shaved them, ever since then dark hairs grow back and back and back again. Waxing is probably the best short term solution but I'd seriously recommend seeing a beauty therapist in order to make sure your not allergic, and if there are any other options available to you, really dont worry, people think waaaaaay too much about things like these, it is JUST hair and it can easily be removed. Laser removal often suits this type of problem, but again, professional consultations are required, your hairs might not be very thick and simply require a removal cream. From the flag on your profile I'm guessing your also from the UK, go to boots and ask one of the beauty counters if they can help you out but don't panic it's very easily sorted. My stomach hair is none existent after a wax. =D

A reader, anonymous, writes (27 April 2010):

First let me state that there is absolutely nothing wrong with you.

Excessive body hair, typically in reference to places which are considered masculine areas of hair growth, on a woman is called hirsutism. Usually it is caused by an increase in testosterone (or other male dominant hormone) production. Sometimes certain medications or stressful situations can increase or diminish the odds of this happening.

Usually tweezing and waxing are the most preferred methods of hair removal. If it is bothering you so much that it causes you extreme psychological distress, such as worrying about your boyfriend leaving you, though... it may be best to go see your doctor and discover the cause. If they can help you pinpoint what directly caused the hormonal changes then you can treat that which should reduce your odds of hair growth.

Don't stress too much about it, though. I have had this problem most of my life and from what I can gather it bothers me more than it does anyone else. I've even brought it up to my husband and he just laughed and said that he really doesn't notice it that often. I think any guy who would leave you over facial hair probably doesn't deserve you, though.

A female reader, Basschick Australia +, writes (27 April 2010):

Basschick agony auntYes it's perfectly normal, as is hair on your upper lip, much to our horror. Hair grows where it grows despite our cultural rejecton of it. That's why they invented products like Nair and that little facial buffer. The buffer works okay you just have to rub for awhile to see results. Nair works better just don't leave it on more than about 1 min. because the chemicals will burn your skin and then your chin or upper lip with look like a sunburn. And P.S. your guy doesn't have to know! Just stay on top of your grooming and it can be your little secret.

A female reader, swordandredrose United States +, writes (27 April 2010):

It's normal. Some girls get unwanted or unusual hair growing on their chins. The best way to get rid of them is threading. I am not sure if you know what it is or not. It's a way of getting rid of facial hair (only for women) and it is a Middle Eastern tradition. Try that one for sure because threading takes off the hair from its root which is really good because it would take months for the hair to grow back. The unfortunate thing is that it is never going to stop growing and you have to keep removing it. Just like the hair on your arms or legs or your eye brows for example. But the fortunate thing is that now you know how to properly get rid of it. Don't EVER shave it, unless you really have no other choice. Because shaving doesn't take off the hair form the root so the root gets thicker and obviously it would grow back faster.

A female reader, boo22 United Kingdom +, writes (27 April 2010):

boo22 agony auntIt's very common unfortunately for us girls and you just get more as you get older. The good news is there's laser hair removal that's around 30 quid a session up here in the north, and that will get rid of them permanently. Most beauty salons do it now so make an appointment. You won't regret it x
