Handling dogs & disease?

Question - (1 February 2009) 3 Answers - (Newest, 1 February 2009)
A female United States age 41-50, anonymous writes:

HI. I want to know if anybody here knows if having/ handling dogs transmit any kind of diseases that could affect female health and/or pregnancy. I've been having this doubt on my mind for years and have not find an answer.

The thing is years ago I listened to my then pregnant sister talking about some kind of apparent health threat associated with dogs. She said to my mother her OBGYN ran some kind of test (I think) on her and told her something about dogs transmmiting something apparently.

Then my sister said to my mother-totally disregarding my presence-that if her OBGYN thought she was in danger of being contaminated with "it" then she was "sure" I HAD to have "it" too, because I have been in close contact with dogs all my life.

Of course, I was concerned but didn't ask her what it was since she wasn't talking to me. We are adults but since my family is dysfunctional and my sister sometimes likes to talk things that could concern me only to my mother while I'm around (very disrespectful), to draw attention to her, I try to ignore her so she wouldn't be encouraged to do it again.

My sister wouldn't make it up. If there isn't such a thing maybe I misunderstood.

At least I know papillomma viruses don't get transmitted from species to species. Humans cannot get Dog papilloma viruses.

Thanks for your replies.

Since almost everyone in America has a dog, wouldn't you think the entire population would be aware of a disease that could be transmitted from dogs to humans? There is only one such disease: rabies

I think Lazyguy has it exactly right.

Your sister doesn't sound that bright so could have got mixed up or was just trying to spite you.

If you have concerns then speak to your doctor.

Good Luck!! xx

LazyGuy agony auntThere is a disease cats can transmit, although if you owned cats for most of your life you are probably immune, ask a doctor. Dogs, nope.

The biggest problem with dogs is afterwards. Kids are the most common bite victims for a reason.

As you said, most diseases just don't carry between species.

Most likely your sister mis-understood or got cats and dogs mixed up.
