 If you see each other, say at school every day then I'd say some texting or a call once or twice during the week would be good. If you don't get to see them on the weekend (one day) then definitely talk then. Every day is too much unless you two both want to and you only see each other on weekends. Once an hour would drive me away so fast, I had a girl that would do that to me and it really pushes someone away fast.
Also let the person have time to themselves to hang out with their friends. My guidelines have been that one day on the weekend is for the gf and the other is for my friends. That way everyone stays happy.
