Don't be scared of ashamed. I know it must be scary as you always think the worse, but it may be something like a fatty cyst that is harmless. Reasure yourself by going to see your doctor. Remember doctors and nurses are used to seeing boobs and bits!

You will feel more relaxed once you have been and got it checked, just be positive.

Get up and go get youreself checked. If you're not well I don't think you should think about getting embarressed because if you don't have good health then you have nothing. So its nothing to be embarrassed about.

There's nothing to be embarrassed or ashamed about.

If you're really worried then you can ask to see a female nurse or doctor. Don't leave it because it's not going to go away.

99% it is nothing serious because in your age group (18-21)it is very rare to get cancer or anything of that sort but nontheless to rest your mind at peace go and see your dr.

So_Very_Confused agony auntwhy are you ashamed? what did you do that would cause you shame?

most women have lumps... as someone said you need to know yours...

that being said... it can't hurt to see a doctor and that is what they are for and they are used to all sorts of things.

it will be ok...

aunt honesty agony auntI completely understand why you are scared, it is only natural to try and hide something and pretend that it doesnt exist. Its so much easier if you try to forget about it. But hunny you really need to get this checked out. I know it might not be nothing but if you think of the worst case scenario that it is cancerous well then the longer you are leaving it to get checked out the worse you could be making it and the more terminal it could be. Sweetie I know that you are scared who wouldnt be. But you need to get yourself to a doctor to reassure yourself that it is nothing to worry about. Please take our advise and go and get it checked out! You are better being safe than sorry. If you dont want to go alone why not ask a friend or a trusted family member to go with you. Good Luck.

A female reader, Tisha-1 United States +, writes (4 June 2011):

Tisha-1 agony auntOkay, chances are it's nothing serious. Most women have lumpy breasts. The key is knowing your own landscape of lumps.

That being said.

Ahem.

GET YOURSELF INTO THE DOCTOR'S OFFICE NOW!!!

Do you realize that if it IS something more serious, you are at this moment going from a simple out-patient procedure at an early stage to a massive surgery where they could remove your breast, along with the nipple and lymphnodes????? Followed by awful chemotherapy????

Sweetheart, please don't make a mistake like that because you are embarrassed...

DO NOT WAIT. Trust me on this.

It'll probably be a normal lump. GO!!!

angelDlite agony auntabsolutely get yourself straight to the doctor! this may be be very serious or it maybe nothing to worry about, but you definitely need to get it checked out.

even if your GP is a man, there is no need to be shy. they see breasts every day of the week. i hope you will ring your practice on Monday morning? if the receptionist tells you there are no soon appointments, don't be put off. tell her what your symptom is and they will fit you in to see a doctor on the same day

You have to go to the doctor and you have to go soon! Otherwise, you will worry yourself to death. My mom found a lump and went to the doctor. In the end, it was determined that the lump was a benign cyst. It really gave her peace of mind. Look at it this way: if it is something bad you have to know as soon as possible and if it is not then you will sleep a lot better.

A reader, anonymous, writes (4 June 2011):

OP you should more scared of not going to see your doctor to be honest.

Having a lump on your breast can be any number of things from a benign to a malignant growth. You have to find out and find out soon, there is a chance this could be life threatening. Is embarrassment worth risking that? Is it really? Is it worth perhaps losing your breast because you left it too late?

There's nothing to be scared of, we pay doctors to look after our bodies this is what they do, they do it every day. I had to have a rectal exam a few years back, not exactly a pleasant experience having another man's fingers up my butt but it was very necessary OP, my health is far more important than a bit of embarrassment and frankly the thought that it was something serious far outweighed any anxiety I had about it.

Why would you be ashamed? Shame is when you do something wrong OP, you did nothing wrong and nobody needs to know anyway. Only your doctor needs to know. Don't worry about telling anyone else, they don't need to know. It's most likely a cyst or something benign but you *cannot* take that risk, you have to go get checked, if your doctor is a man and you'd prefer a woman then just set up an appointment with a female doctor.

Set up an appointment as soon as possible OP. Forget your fears and your anxiety, overcome it, fight through it because the alternative is not even worth contemplating.

Don't wait, don't mull this over, set it up ASAP, on Monday you'll be examined by the end of the week you'll know what's going on. Just do it!
