 It might be because he meant it, or because it is pickup line. Some people just got nice names or ones that fit well.
Probably best not to over-analyse.

I don't know... I've never really thought "what a beautiful name" when I hear someone's name for the first time. For me it's more about the personality attached to the name. I never liked the name 'Samantha' until I met my friend Sam.
Some guy said I had an 'elegant' name the other day, and I was just wondering what on earth about my name made it elegant! Haha.

But I must say this....many names ae in fact unique and beautiful. Common names do not do it for me, but names like
Shahlaurie, Rossalyn, London, Hillary....the list could go on and on.....even when a girl has names usually reserved for men...like Reggie....wow!

im a gurl, and yes, i think that wen someone says you have a beautiful name, or they love your name that they really mean it..
when i exceptionally like someones name, i tell them. it makes them feel good i bet, because i get compliments on my name ALL the time, and i love it... my name is Mariah by the way.
my name might not sound that great to some people, but i do get tons of compliments, and i love all of them, maybe just cuz i love my name, but whatever. its 2 30 in the morning and i seriously need sleep, so i might be delirious, but to answer the question, yes, people do think "wow that is a beautiful name" sometimes.... as i do.
i mean have you seriously never heard someone's name and just thot "how pretty" or "that is a great name"?
i dont know.

reader, anonymous, writes (9 April 2008): It's just a nice way to compliment someone. A beautiful name often goes hand in hand with a beautiful appearance, so it's just like another compliment a guy might give a girl. It's not too forward or suggestive, it just comes across as sweet :]

I'm a girl and if I like someones name I will tell them/compliment them about it. So yes if I hear a name that I like I might think 'wow thats a beautiful name'.
Some guys might say that as a way to hint that they think you are beautiful too.

But generally a guy will think your name is beautiful only if they are attracted to you. Saying your name is beautiful is just a pick up line. But its not like guys sit around talking about the beauty of a name.
He might say outloud "what a beautiful name!" But what he's really thinking is "nice rack!"
Don't take men too literally sometimes.
