A female age 30-35, anonymous writes:

i recently had unprotected sex, i haven't missed a period as such i started bleeding about 4days earlier than my period was due, it started off a brown colour then gradually turned redder, it was really strange, it would go from nothing in the morning to quite a bit, then nothing the next morning to quite alot, it lasted onlt 3 days instead of my usual 5 and wasn't very painful! I have also got very sensitive breasts, they dnt hurt, just very sensitive, i keep getting constant headaches and i need to go to the toilet all the time! I took a pregnancy test the day i started bleeding but it was negative, do you think i tested too early as it was only 5days after i had sex?! is there a chance i could be pregnant?!

please help i'm confused!

Home preganancy tests take 15-21 days to be able to read a positive result. The reason is because they work by detecting a pregnancy hormone in your body. The sperm takes 2 days to get through the egg. From then it takes another 2 days for the fertilized egg to travel up the fallopian tubes & attach to uterine wall where your baby begins to form. So 5 days after sex, there is no way a pregnancy test of any kind could detect that soon. You need to wait another 15 days at least before taking another test.

L.O.S.E.R. agony auntI agree, redo the test in about 1 week from now.Hypothetically you could have a fake period (or what's the word for that in English).Symptoms are almost definitely caused with your mind and worry so ignore them and try to remain calm.I'm almost sure you're not pregnant but just to be sure...Don't repeat the same mistake in the future.

If you only had sex 5 days ago then it is very doubtful that a pregnancy test would give you a reliable result, however it is also very unlikely that you would have any pregnancy symptoms this soon aswell. I think that you are worried and so you body is playing tricks on you. The fact that you have bled is a good sign that you are not pregnant but a small percentage of women do. The best thing you could have done was to take the morning after pill to be sure but this only works up to 72 hours after intercourse. All I can advise is that you relax and retest yourself in about three weeks. The earliest pregnancy tests can pick up whether you are pregnant a week before your next period. Take care and be more careful in the future. Let me know how you get on.

The pregnancy test is only effective after 2 weeks after you've had unprotected sex. Its very unlikely your pregnant as its not always as straight forward as that it can take quite some time to get pregnant. Saying that its not impossible best redo a test after the 2 weeks are up and you should check yourself for std's too just to be sure. Periods can change over time but a regular smear test will rule out any problems.
