Could this be a latex allergy, or is this normal for your first time?

A female United States age 30-35, anonymous writes:

So I just lost my virginity yesterday to my boyfriend. (It hurt a lot, so there wasn't more than just a little bit of thrusting before we stopped)

And he wore a condom, of course. I don't want to get pregnant!

But about five or so hours later, when I was getting ready for bed, I noticed that the inner "lips" were swollen and painful.

Was this just because I had sex for the first time, or could it have been the latex of the condom?

Oh, I should also add that the sizes were a little mismatched, I guess you could say. I'm really tight, he's big... We had to use some lubrication help.

Any help would be appreciated! I just wanna know what you guys think this would be!

Honeypie agony auntWork on getting wet before sex. It will make it all SO much easier. It could be that you guys used an oil or water based lubricant. FOREPLAY is to sex (for women) as coffee-beans are to brewing coffee. VITAL.

Water based tend to dry out (as it evaporate during sex) - something as simple as spit/water will reactivate it. Also water based are usually better to use as they do not weaken condoms like oil-based lubricants do.

Oil based are mostly beneficial for people NOT using condoms and for those with a glycerin/paraben intolerable.

chigirl agony auntI think this is probably just because he hurt you and you swell up as a natural reaction. If you bump your lip your lip swells up as well. It's no different. It hurt, and it made you swollen.

A female reader, anonymous, writes (20 May 2012):

I was mismatched in the same way you were my first time. I was very sore, there was quite a bit of swelling, and i felt like i had a bladder infection for many days after. We did not use a condom at the time.

I also have periods where i am allergic to latex. A latex allergy can cause a lot of swelling, itching, and a burning sensation. If it is a reaction to latex, an otc anti-histamine like benedryl will fix the symptoms.

person12345 agony auntIt's probably OK, I know I've gotten cramps after having sex before. If it happens a lot you should probably ask your gynecologist. It's normal also to get cramping a day or so before your period starts, especially if you're poking around in there.

Most women aren't aroused enough their first time, it's definitely normal for that part to happen. You don't just get wet, but your vagina also gets a LOT looser. Some women can fit their entire fist in their vagina. It gets a lot easier to tell when you're physically ready as well as to know how to become physically ready on demand most of the time.

Thank you, person12345. This was just a spur of the moment thing, we were doing sexual things before we had sex, but I guess I probably wasn't "wet" enough...

I also just realized after I submitted this question that I've got cramps as well.

Is that normal too?

I don't know if it's period cramps or not, and I don't keep exact track of my periods, but I think if it is period cramps, it's a day or two early.

A female reader, person12345 United States +, writes (20 May 2012):

person12345 agony auntSwelling alone probably isn't a latex allergy, more likely just irritation from it being your first time and pushing too hard. Especially since you didn't notice until 5 hours later. Itching would be far more of a sign of an allergy. I know I once had a reaction to a lube on a particular brand of condoms and I was almost in tears it was so uncomfortably itchy.

I doubt you're mismatched in size, more likely you just weren't totally relaxed and aroused for your first time. Your vagina can expand to fit an entire baby, it's unlikely he's that big. Next time you have sex make sure you are totally aroused. Have him get you close to orgasm before you try. Good call using lube, next time use even more of it.

You should try latex condoms a few more times before jumping to allergy because given the lack of itching and the delay in noticing, it doesn't sound like that.
