I have a 30-day cycle..My last menstrual period starts on january 11, 2009. I had a contact with my husband on the 22nd, 24th and 26th of january 2009. Now I'm pregnant. My question is, is there any bad effect to my baby's development the 3-shot hard liquor I drunk during the 22nd and 26th of January? It's my first baby and I'm paranoid.

It's most unlikely to have had any effect at all on your baby, and there's nothing much wrong with drinking during pregnancy provided it's done in moderation. Depending on which medical 'expert' you listen to, a glass of red wine in the evening could even be beneficial.

You sound like a very sensible, caring Mother to be and I hope everything goes well for your pregnancy and subsequent birth of your healthy baby.

When you drank the alcohol you are worried about on two dates around the time you believe you conceived, your egg would have been fertilized but not embedded in the uterine wall and therefore not yet attached by placenta to your own blood for any transfer to take place. It is highly unlikely that anything you drank on those two days will have harmed the developing foetus.

It is important however, that you take advantage of all the professional antenatal checks available to you throughout your pregnancy. I wish you and your October baby all the best.

sparkleworks agony auntMost likely your baby is absolutely fine :)

Obviously it's impossible to say for sure, but if your cycle is regular it's most likely you conceived on the 26th. Fertilisation doesn't occur instantaneously, it can take a few hours... and it takes a few days after that for the embryo to implant into the mother's uterus. So if the last time you drank was on the 26th, then any alcohol would have been cleared from your bloodstream long before the embryo came into contact with it, and there wouldn't be any possible damage.

In any case, it's unlikely that anything in the first two weeks of pregnancy will have a lasting effect on the baby, because at such an early stage if there's any significant damage to the embryo it's more likely to abort than to keep developing. You're obviously still pregnant so I'm quite sure you don't have anything to worry about.

Hope this helps, congratulations and good luck!

xx

k_c100 agony auntIt was very early in the stages of the baby's development and if I have got my dates right it could even have been before you conceived, so I very much doubt that you could have done any harm to your baby.

Just make sure you dont drink any alcohol for the rest of the pregnancy, make sure you are eating balanced nutritional meals and taking care of yourself from now on and I'm sure you will have a healthy happy baby.

If you are very concerned by this then perhaps you should see your doctor, they will experience this all the time and will be in a better position to advise you on your health and your babies health.
