Could my symptoms be a sign of pregnancy?

A female United States age 36-40, anonymous writes:

Last week, things got a bit heated between me and my boyfriend. We didn't have sex, but he had touched himself briefly before fingering me. I didn't notice any pre-ejaculate on him, so I didn't think anything of it. Later on I spoke to him about my concerns, and he assured me it was very unlikely I would get pregnant from that night.

However, my period was due on Thursday and I've been spotting since Tuesday/Wednesday. The first day this happened it was bright red but now it's darker, as though I'm menstruating, just very lightly. I had mild cramps very briefly the first two days.

This has never happened to me before, normally my period starts very heavy and tapers off. I've had the usual PMS symptoms, which I've read can also be early pregnancy symptoms, so I'm not sure what to think.

I'm also concerned it could be a sign of something more serious. Menstruation has been a very difficult thing for me for at least six years, it brings terrible things along with it every month such as fainting and vomiting. This sort of thing also runs in my family, my aunt and grandmother both had the same problem. I haven't had a chance to set up an appointment with a gynecologist yet, and have never gone to one before. Because of that, I'm really uncertain of what's going on right now.

Anyway, how long should I wait to take a pregnancy test? If I don't get my period soon I intend to go to a clinic and get tested there, for more definite results. Also, until then, what are some other signs I should be looking for?

Thank you all for your input, I had a feeling it wasn't pregnancy but needed to hear another opinion on the matter. I was greatly concerned only because I had looked up my symptoms, and irregular spotting was listed as something that occurs during early pregnancy. Thankfully I did end up getting my period, but thank you all nonetheless.

You are not pregnant. Lots of things can effect your period, and stess can have a huge influence. Stop stressing!

You have been having problems with your period for over 6 years, and this medical condition is genetic. Absolutely go see a gynocologist, she/he will have advice how to help minimize pain/cramping/etc when you menstrating.

The types of food you eat, stress reduction, even taking b.c. pills, can help reduce your issues during your period.

May sound unthinkable but,, having frequent orgasm's during your cycle helps alot! Your body releases large amounts of endorphens during an "O" releving stress-cramping-etc.

I should think it's unlikely, but if you're worried, maybe take a test or speak to a doctor about it.
