A female United States age 41-50, *rinPatterson writes:

I guess I need career decision help. Ok here it goes.. back in September I fell ill and was hospitalized for a week and went thru numerous tests and such..turned to try and find out what happended to me. I became unemployed due to they amount of time out I was out of work and on TDI. Ok so when my doctor said I could return to work I went back to my employer and they stated I did not take the necessary steps to assure that I kept my job while out sick.. they are being horrible.. in the meantime I had gotten a part time job in a completely different field (selling mortagages) this was totally not recommended by my doctor.. that I work until I ironed out what the medical proceedure was going to be.. surgery, what the prob was..well I had surgery and am slowly recooperating... and this was back in January my doctor said I could go back to work.. there is none.. so I applied for unemployment insurance.. they mortagage company let me go saying due to company overhead they did not want to keep me(not enough experience to be and asset I guesse) so anyways I was offered a positon temporarily cleaning and maintenance at they apartment complex where I live.. well I said absolutely because well I have to keep a roof over my head.. while I was out on tdi awaiting surgery and all of they issues in regards to my help I said well I am going to finish my education if I can so I said I am going to sign up for the nursing course I need to get a job in teh medical field. What the heck can it hurt.. my old employer that I had been with for two years stated there was no work available and they did not need me back and they are giving me a hard time with my unemployment to boot.. so I go to sign up for the nursing course and of course it is filled so I have to wait another month to try and sign up for the class again.. it's hard to get into..

In the meantime I am working my butt off for they apartment complex where I live cleaning to pay this months rent.. but it is only for this month..I am still waiting for unemployment to render a decision which I will find out tommorrow..and well I am at my widths end..this temp cleaning job is only for this month.. so should I just go with the flow for this month, wait for the decision from unemployment tommorrow and like look like a demon for a job while I am not cleaning.. the plan was to take this class and have my nursing certificate by this summer while collecting..and now everything is just upside down..and if unemployment if I have to appeal a decisoin.. I don't know how long it will take.. I mean I don't mind cleaning.. christ I have to, I have no income and rent is due so I am lucky they offered that.. but after the 15th of the month I will have to make next months rent.. I am so frusterated.. I mean.. do I keep to the plan of sticking with the medical field and pray my insurance benefits come thru..?? and re-sign for the class at they end of May when it is available again? and apply at other jobs while I am not cleaning?

A female reader, Emilysanswers United Kingdom +, writes (5 April 2009):

The nursing course is definitely a priority if you know that nursing is the job for you and there is work out there for nurses.

So until then, you have to hope that the unemployment comes through but expect it not to.

Go out tomorrow and find any job you can, waiting tables, cleaning cars, ANYTHING that will allow you to have a roof over your head and possibly eat.

Do what you have to do to survive but always be looking for the next step up. If you can afford to get into nursing AND you know there is money in it at the moment then do it asap.

Good Luck!! xx
