A female reader, DrPsych United Kingdom +, writes (7 May 2009):

DrPsych agony auntAs the other people have advised, it is very important you go to your doctor right away for a simple urine test. Diabetic meters are usually accurate - they have to be, they save lives!

It is a very simple procedure to be tested for diabetes and because of your medical history and recent readings with your mothers meter then it is important you are checked out. If the urine test (which looks for sugars in your wee) comes back positive the GP would usually do a blood test to confirm the diagnosis and then refer you onto outpatients for education/ monitoring.

If diabetes is not the problem, then I suggest you are checked for insulin resistance via a blood test. Many people who go on to have diabetes in later life start out with insulin resistance before getting type 2 diabetes when the pancreas stops working properly. You can see a GP without your mothers consent if you wish and the consultation would be confidential. However, I advise you to tell her as she can help you with the diabetic education and diet if necessary. There are also diabetes testing kits available at many high st chemists like BOOTs but these maybe too expensive for you and your best bet is to see a GP.

Probably, if you eat a lot of sugar, you may have develloped type 2 diabetes.

Oh in fact here is what you can do:

Call NHS direct or go on their website.

http://www.nhsdirect.nhs.uk/

08 45 46 47

The number looks too short but it does work.

They can tell you if you need to go to the doc to get checked out.

Good Luck!! xx

A male reader, Harry Castle United Kingdom +, writes (7 May 2009):

Harry Castle agony auntPLEASE go and be checked properly. The inconsistency of your readings is worrying.

If you are really OK, then no harm will be done by seeing your GP for confirmation: he truly won't mind seeing you even if all is well, and if there is a problem, catching it early will save you from all sorts of diabetic complictions, not the least of which is loss of sight.

You wrote about all the classic symptoms of diabetes:-

"dizziness, blurred vision, thirsty all the time and going to the loo alot a feel like am gonna faint all the time"

which clearly is not just a bug.

I repeat - GO TO YOUR GP, AND GO TODAY.

Harry.

Did you tell her it was 19 last time?

You need to go and get checked by a doctor.

You are in the UK so I am pretty sure you can call up and make your own appointment.

Do it!

Good Luck!! xx

A female reader, Honeygirl South Africa +, writes (7 May 2009):

Honeygirl agony auntSweetie, no a reading so high is not normal. You need to tell your mom what your symptoms are, the dizziness, thirsty all the time, going to the loo all the time, and I suspect that you have also lot quite a lot of weight. You urgently need to go to your doctor for testing.

My Son lost lots of weight and was drinking gallons of water and spending all his time in the loo! I took him for a check-up and the dr found that his sugar level was at 22 - he was hospitalised for 5 days until they could stabilise his blood sugar. Now he takes insulin and eats very healthily!

A female reader, Emilysanswers United Kingdom +, writes (7 May 2009):

You need to just tell her. You tested your blood sugar on her machine and it was dangerously low then dangerously high.

Tell her you think that you might be diabetic and would like to go to the doctor about it.

If it is the genetic nasty kind of diabetes and it goes unchecked then you could be doing serious damage to your body. You could even fall into a coma if your blood sugar gets too low / high and that is REALLY bad.

It's not like you are telling her that you are pregnant or on drugs. Just say that you think you have symptoms of diabetes and want to go to the doctor.

Good Luck!! xx

Harry Castle agony auntI am diabetic, and urge you to get checked as soon as possible.

Your reading of Blood Sugar Level should be between 4 and 7 mmol/litre. That figure of 19.5 is a cause for immediate concern.

Keep off the chocolate and go to your GP as soon as possible, taking a urine sample.

Your mum will not worry about your using her test meter, but she WILL worry about that reading.

Go today, and tell me tomorrow how you got on.

Harry.

Honeygirl agony auntSweetie, your blood sugar reading should be around 4.5 however I would suggest that you go to your doctor right away for a check up. My son is diabetic and he had similar symptoms to you.

Mail me if you want to chat further.
