A female reader, anonymous, writes (5 June 2011):

Also you have to consider the risk of pregnancy. If the young woman was to become pregnant by her male teacher that would be an extremely awful situation so perhaps the harsher sentencing is to prevent that sort of thing as obviously that has far worse consuqences than hurt feelings. The law always involves itself when babies are concerned. And quite rightly, too.

The female teacher has the risk of pregnancy as well except as a fully-consenting grown woman she assumes that risk and should deal with it accordingly; whereas a young female student would be seen as much more easily influenced which can lead to reckless behaviour.

Also, because of the way sexual contact is perceived by each gender (generally speaking, of course, there are exceptions) female students are far more likely to be coerced, used and left in a terrible emotional state. A male student may be left feeling very hurt in some cases but I think people have to admit the risk is more for the young girls. Especially since as far as sex is concerned in a lot of cases, she ends up seen as a slut and he ends up seen as a hero.

totally agree, i guess the one main difference is that girls get more emotional and often teenage boys just want the physical. Then again not always true. I do think paedophilia is wrong of course but do not see anything wrong with radical age differences in relationships as you can never really judge other people properly

Imagine if teenage girls were subjected to that kind of societal pressure to just shrug off the abuse from a male teacher. Women's groups would be up in arms about it and demanding a culture-wide discussion about how terribly we are treating the fragile psyche of teenage girls.

DanceInTheDark agony auntYep. Theres a total double standard.

If a Male teacher sleeps with a female student, he's a sick freak pedophile.

If a Female Teacher sleeps with a male student, He scored with a teacher! WOOHOO.

A male reader, Odds United States +, writes (17 May 2011):

Odds agony auntCertainly there's a double standard. Female sentencing discount at work - get probation where the men get hard time. Plus, there's the court of public opinion. Even when people agree there's something sick about women who sleep with underage male students, no one thinks of them as a threat.

Truth is, even when an underage person wants it, we consider them underage because we don't believe they possess the wisdom to control their sexual urges correctly. There's no true consent, instead just urges. We could argue about where that line should be drawn, but it's there somewhere.
