Wouldn't my ex say something if he wanted me back? Why is he acting like this?

Hi. I need to get some advice and quick! My ex has gotten back in contact with me recently and I still love him so much. There is still a huge spark between us and we get on so well together. He has told me a few times he still loves me, he is making an effort with my friends (something he never did before), he comes up to talk to me on nights out, calls me and texts me, and he has been confiding in me. I'm not sure what to think though.. pretty much everyone seems to think he wants me back, but I'm not so sure.. would he not just ask me straight out if that's what he wanted?
