Why would my mother say that?

Question - (8 November 2014) 2 Answers - (Newest, 9 November 2014)
A male United States age 30-35, anonymous writes:

My mother was casually complaining about my older brother's bad behaviour while sweeping in the living room. Suddenly, she said. "That's why I can't love my children more than I love myself." in an annoyed tone.

Without giving any details about my family, what do you think a comment like that says about my mother. Please be open minded. I am trying to avoid getting biased answers.

All responses are appreciated.

A female reader, Brokenv Canada +, writes (9 November 2014):

Your mom didn't mean it. How many times have you said something to reflect back and know that is not what you meant.

Your mom loves you. I don't doubt that. Don't get me wrong she should never have said that. If that statement really bothers you, speak with her about it. Tell her is hurt your feelings.

Every night when I go to bed I review my day with my kids. I wonder if I showed them how much I loved them that day. Some days I run short. Being a mother is one tough job.

Ciar agony auntYour mother was frustrated and her comment was a reflection of that. I would not read more into it.

You haven't given us any other reason to think she doesn't love you.

In addition to being a blessing, motherhood is also a HUGE, never ending and mostly thankless job (regardless of the age of our children). Every now and then all that stress and sacrifice gets to us.
