Agree with the answer below. It might be that he is lacking in self-esteem and wants to remind himself that he is loved by someone to boost his confidence. Don't fall for it unless, as said below, he starts making serious concessions that you think are genuine.

 Playing games I expect. Some men, in the absence of something better will sometimes keep an ex on the hook for kicks.
Unless he is giving you clear messages ' I miss you, I love you and want us to talk and try again' (stuff like that) I'd ignore him.
