The period is a painful time to begin with, and the fact that you are even remotely horny during it is completely opposite to my experience. I wouldn't touch the last man on earth with a ten foot poll during mine.
Thats said, you are more aroused and have sex on yours, it will still be painful. You are probably experiencing cramps during your session and it only hurt to the point of tears when they happen. Only you would be able to know for sure what is going on with your period.
You might try consulting your OBGYN with what you are going through. It could be anything from cramps to the position you are having sex in that causes this pain.
I hope you figure this out and stop having horrible pain.
