Would it be any different if they were sitting around all day drinking? Or if they were at home all day playing world of warcraft and not out there working? Lazy people are lazy people it's that simple and I'm Irish I'm well aware of what chavs are but England and Ireland have systems that allow people like that to do what they do. They can live like that because the government will give them benefits to live off of. I know quite a few people that are on the dole and have been years. They go out and drink or they just hang out playing games and watching movies then go out on the weekends. They like their lifestyle, they've never figured out what they want to do in life career-wise they just know that they don't want to be washing dishes or stacking shelves. They've never needed lots of money as they've always lived within their means, they don't commit crime, they don't lie, cheat or steal and they are actually very good people, great friends and very generous with their time and what money they do have. All they're doing is living in the same system you live in, the way the system allows them to live, just because you don't want to live that way doesn't mean it's wrong.

Lots of people believe the government bullshit that the only way to contribute to society is by the tax you pay and the work you do, well if money is all you care about fair enough, stay blind. Some people may never work a day in their lives or pay any taxes but still contribute good things to the people around them. Are good caring friends, take care of others, would jump into a river to save a drowning dog or just be there to console a friend during a break up. They contribute in many other ways to their community. Some people have ambition, they need to be out there doing things and feeling like they want to better themselves, there is nothing wrong with people that don't have that same drive.

You see OP in your original question you sound like you're blaming drugs. Drugs can have a bad effect on people, it can create addicts who lie, cheat, steal and even kill/die for them. But that's down to the person, not the drug and some are far worse than others, like heroin and crack.

If they want to sit around all all day and just do drugs, then that's their choice. If they're not harming anyone else then what's the big deal?

It may be the life you want to lead but it doesn't mean there's anything wrong with it either if they're not hurting anyone else. If you can't understand why someone may sit around all day doing nothing and is bored enough to try drugs, then perhaps it's better you don't understand but I wouldn't be so quick to judge people who decide to take a different path in life than you.

ok cerberus, yes coffee tea cola all that is a 'drug', weed has caused less deaths than alchohol... but then surely if i was out at my mates and they brought mkat and crack cocaine round why would i get nervous and uncomfortable? if its not as bad as you say? im 18 i think im well with in my rights of using drugs if i wish, i dont have to explain my self to any one so im not bothed about my parents finding out, why does it bother me? why do i think "you low life bums" when my jobless friends do nothing all day but take drugs and surely killing them selves? theres more to life than that surley? is it difrent in the U.S to the U.K? ie i dont think you have 'chavs' in the US , thats what im describing when i call friends bums! chavs sitting in a room all day taking drugs...

Why not? You take drugs too. If you've ever drank alcohol, coffee, tea, red bull, mountain dew or coke etc. then you're a drug user too.

I spent about 6 or 7 years taking lots of drugs only at the weekends though and I never developed an addiction. I had a great time, one of the best periods of my life. It was the same as drinking alcohol except the effects were different so different things would happen. Most of my friends were drug users and all good trustworthy people who used drugs socially at the weekends. We all had jobs or were in college and maintained those well and were still able to take drugs. I've known more people to OD on coffee than I have drugs, I have not once in all those years seen anyone OD because we all took care of each other.

I had a choice of what type of night I would have and what kind of altered reality I put my brain in. I could be drunk, say and do really stupid crap, end up in a fight or on the floor getting sick etc. Or I could take ecstasy spend the night having ridiculously deep conversations with strangers, hugging and feeling a profound love for all my friends that were there with me and dancing the night away to music that gives me rushes of pleasure which each beat. I could smoke weed and everything became more colourful and funny.

OP drugs can be bad and it's not a good idea for teenagers to take them regularly as they're brains haven't matured properly yet but do you really think if they were only bad that so many people would be taking them?

They're actually great fun and most of them are safer than alcohol.

People take drugs for the same reasons that people drink alcohol, it's as simple as that. The only reason people think they're worse is because the government can't tax them and has for years held up a policy of prohibition and therefore only wants people to think they're bad. So they tell stories of people on acid jumping off buildings, they tell stories of people on ecstasy dying fro heat exhaustion and always blame the drug. Yet how many people have been beaten, murdered, raped, in car accidents or had their livers fail due to alcohol? Yet alcohol is never blamed for those things really or it's just accepted that it's okay to drink but not too much.

Why do people, teenagers etc take drugs? Because most of the time they're a hell of a lot of fun. They're cheap and they're something to do. Why sit around all day doing nothing but talking when you can sit around all day on a chemically induced roller coaster and figure out that the meaning of life may have something to do with the purple unicorn with rainbows for eyes who's been doing a tango with you for the past few hours.

cottongin agony auntSome people just like to alter their reality. The reason for this can vary. As teenagers you are trying to find where you "fit in" and your brain is changing to become the person you will be as an adult. Things like bipolar disorder and schizophrenia start to come out in the teen years as well. People who have a family of history of addiction or mental illness are genetically more prone to using drugs. It makes them feel "normal" or "better" or like they can do anything. Also, there honestly isn't much else for young people to do... besides experiment with drugs. You may argue against that but to many people life is boring. And to someone like me who doesn't have any hobbies and doesn't enjoy much of anything and is depressed, as a teenager the only thing I would do is seek out drugs. I've tried almost every drug in the book. I still feel as though there is nothing to do. I don't really do drugs anymore, but i still crave them like crazy and i get bored out of my mind to the point that i cry.

I don't think all young people should be tarred with the same brush and say they do it because of peer pressure. Some people just want to know what it's like. I wanted to know why people smoked, so one day I tried - on my own - I just bought a cigarette from an older girl at school. So it's a bit different to drugs but I was never pressured or tried it to be cool I just thought "what's all the fuss about??" and realised it was disgusting!

I think drugs appeal to teenagers because of the promised "high" and the opportunity for escapism. Some kids just have a harder time and see people laughing and having fun through drug use and think that is the way they want to have fun. I knew a few people who dabbled with cannabis and it didn't take long for them to grow out of it, again they didn't want to be cool as know one knew they did it, they just experimented and luckily had the brains to see it was a waste of time and money. Take care x

aunt honesty agony auntI think some teenagers just want to fit in with the crowd so they take drugs because they are still not matured and they think it is the cool thing to do. Most teenagers after a while get sense once they grow up and see that it is not cool at all, while for others it is to late and they are hooked on them, I am with you on this one it is not a cool thing to do and it is so sad to hear about so many teenagers getting themselves in to this mess just to try and impress others and yes you are right they want to grow up to quick and it makes them feel like they are adults and can handle the world of drug abuse.
