A female United States age 30-35, anonymous writes:

It bothers me a lot, I dream all sort of creepy stuff, like rats, mud, humidity, me being hated (in the dream), me being chased by horses, cows, me naked in public etc. I also have pleasant dreams, but in the end they turn out bad.

I don't read into dreams, but when I wake up, I feel weird and uneasy for a few hours the next day, I can't really describe the state, but I don't like it.

They say dreams are reflection of one's problems and concerns. I do have some issues, but these dreams occur WAY TOO OFTEN. Rarely I forget them, because they all seem to plant themselves in my mind when asleep.

Do you have any suggestions ? Thank you !

I have had bad dreams on and off for years. In the years after a trip I took and then just before starting a new relationship they came back again, not due to that I don't think. Dreamcatchers above the beds have worked for me. I haven't had any bad dreams now at all. I also believe diet and what you think about at night may effect that. Dreams are the subconscious mind's way to resolve issues in your emotional life, but I also believe they are messages from elsewhere.

I would try writing them down as well as discussing them with your therapist to see if that helps.

TEM agony auntYes, it would be a good idea to bring this up at your next session. You might want to keep what is called a dream journal. Just leave a notebook by your bed and jot down notes about the dream you are having as you wake. Those are the dreams we are most likely to remember.

Some of the other suggestions are good for obtaining a more restful sleep. Try not to fill your mind with disturbing images from movies, TV, video games, etc. Don't drink caffeinated beverages, such as cola, too close to bedtime. Try not to eat things that are difficult to digest before bed as well. Lastly, try to tire yourself out with some exercise. This can help you deal with stress and aid in a more restful sleep.

Good luck!

@TEM - I have self-esteem issues, I can't cope with change in my life, I have a stupid job (still looking for a better one), I fear loneliness (I fear that my boyfriend could dump me for something better), I'm rejected by certain members of my family, I've been emotionally abused as a child, being told I was fat, unworthy, ugly and so on.

These issues remained unresolved between me and myself, but I'm seeking professional help. It's been more than a month now since I'm seeing a therapist, but it never crossed my mind until now to ask her about these dreams. Our next meeting is over 2 weeks, so that's why I came here.

A female reader, TEM United States +, writes (6 March 2011):

TEM agony auntI believe the circumstances in the dream are not really important. Dreams rarely make literal sense. It is how you feel in the dream that is important. You feel upset.

There are lots of different theories as to the meaning of dreams. Some say they are a reflection of our innermost fears and desires. Others say they are only physic trash - that is your mind is going through the events of the day and decides which thoughts to keep and which to discard.

I think it is your mind trying to process things and deciding which to make memories from and which to forget. The important thing about your dreams is that you wake feeling uneasy and that the feeling lingers with you for a few hours. That is something to take note of. Your mind is trying to get your attention. There is something in your life that you are ignoring.

You say you have some issues in your life. Perhaps these issues bother you more than you think. These issues may not seem like a big deal to you, or they may seem like the kinds of issues everyone has (job, financial, relationships, etc.) but they mean a lot to you and that's all that matters.

All of the images you mentioned in your dreams are ones that provoke fear. What is going on in your life that has you fearful or worried? Can you pinpoint something? Is it something you can take steps to change? You don't have to solve the problem this minute, you just have to acknowledge it and try to think of ways to solve it.

I would hafta say perhaps stress in ur life or some recent very stressful event occurred in your life... like a layoff of a job, death in family, or something to that effect. Also, Ive heard television can indeed influence your dreams if it is watched before bed. Video games as well and have heard many stories lol about some stuff with that. Feel better :)

1. Read before you go to bed.

2.Watch a lot of tv before you go to bed.

3.Dont think about your dreams, think of nice stuff before you go to bed.

4.Go on the computer before you go to bed.

You can contol it but only before you zonk out.

Distracting my self always works on me, so why not you?
