 Same thing happened with my boyfriend the first time. There's a big mental component to it all - don't worry if he doesn't cum for the next few times, chances are if it's really terrible (which it doesn't sound like it is!) he'll speak up rather that put up with it.
It can take balls (!) to ask him what he wants, but if you can that's a good thing to do.
I was the same as you - I researched as well as I could beforehand, and that's always held me in good stead.

The one thing they don't tell you online is how difficult it is for a man to cum whilst having a blowjob.
