 Wow, worrying about this too much. 2-3 inches is the consensus. Quit stressing about it ONLINE and start driving all this attention into the bedroom with your woman. Sex takes two to make it good. TRY EVERY POSITION IN THE BOOK (and by "book", I mean the Kama Sutra or any other fun book with endless positions) and figure out where your groove is.

I'm not saying that someone can be too small to perform the act of doggy style. Per the discussion happening with my girlfriends right now, one can be too small to FEEL during doggy style, or too small to keep it inside and the thrusts end up feeling empty. One of my friends points out that sometimes it's too small and can't get to her G-Spot, which is usually her favorite part of doggy style.
But, girth does account for a lot, and that can make a big difference as well.

Doggy style is a fun one, I don't know if it's intended to be a "favorite". Like everyone said, everyone is different. I, for one, love doggy style, but I've got a lot of girlfriends who HATE doggy style, because it's uncomfortable for them and impersonal, plus their guy is either too big or too small, making it no good.
This is why you can't rely on one position to work magic on a lady. You have to figure out what SHE likes, where YOUR talents are and then you can determine the best position for you as a couple.

The things to do and not to do in a handy numbered list so you can go down it and do it right.
Don't work like that. It not only varies from woman to woman, it varies with her mood. In fact, doing things from a checklist is most likely to piss her off no end.
Just go with the flow, be aware that there are more options then just missionary and see what she responds to at that moment and what not. If you are lucky you will find a girl who is open enough to simply say what she wants, although that doesn't mean you can stop trying, even those who are aggresive enough sometimes want to be suprised.
Women, that goes for you to, it doesn't always have to be the guy figuring out what to do.

Like me, personally - I love side by side sex, and I love being on top (thought I wear out easily on top). I like doggy style, but hate it when he has one leg propped up because it makes him go even deeper and my man is a little too big to be doing that. Ouch!!
Hmmm... I'm not crazy about doing it outdoors... and I'm not incredibly flexible, so any position that has me upside down or balancing on something I'm probably not going to be very successful at. Or even if I can hold the position, I'll be concentrating too hard on that and not the joy of the sex!
But, every woman is COMPLETELY different. It depends on your man's size and what HE is best at as well.

The only kind of sex that women (and men) don't like is the one that's not plesurable. Usually most positions work out and for me, all of the ones I've tried with my boyfriend have, but if I were to chose the one that I like the most, I would say "standing up". The other ones are just in the same level.
