What is the medical reason that I would need birth control?

A female United States age 41-50, anonymous writes:

I am a 22 year old college student and I recently went to the gynecologist to get birth control. SHe wrote me a prescription for Yaz but when I went to fill the prescription. I wsa told that I was not covered. I am a dependent on my mother's insurance and apparently birth control is not covered for dependents unless there is a medical reason. So I have to get authorization from my doctor. I've already told my doc that I wish to use birth control for pregnancy prevention (which is a hell of a medical reason if you ask me) but now what should i say? What is a medical reason that I would need birth control? And will she give me authorization even though I already told her I wanted it for pregnancy prevention? Or should I just find a new gyno? I could get birth control through my colleg but they only offer one form and it doesn't agree with me. I wanted to try the Yaz birth control but without insurance it's $60 a month. THis is ridiculous! Please someone tell me what I should do!

Thank you so much for your responses! I actually have a medical condition called ulcerative colitis which causes a fair amount of blood loss during a flare up so I am goign to go with that and see what the doc says. That way I am still being honest and i have lots of medical proof of my condition. I have thought about the IUD if thats what u mean by "coil fitted" but again my insurance doesn't cover it and it's over $400 which all has to be paid at once. I honestly think the IUD would be my best option since i am starting medical school soon and don't plan on having children for quite some time. If things don't go well with the doctor I will try the health dept. Again, I really appreciate the advice seeing as I was very angry and borderline frekaing out earlier! You both were very helpful :)

Fatherly Advice agony auntIt is a nasty loophole insurance company's have been using for years to get out of covering birth control or pregnancy for the people who need it the most. The medical reason the pharmacist was looking for was extreme mood swings or exceptionally heavy periods. The pill tends to level those out. If your Dr. is willing to see it that way or if they can say that this brand is medically necessary, It could work with your insurance. Buying your own insurance is the next option if the university has a group plan you are eligible for. An individual plan would cost more than the prescription. The other option is your local health department, Where you have limited income they should be able to help you since the free method disagrees with you. There will certainly be forms to fill but the programs are there.

How much is it to get a coil fitted. It's not pleasant, and it might bit a bit pricey up front but you are covered for 5 years.

I'm not familiar with having to pay for medical care so I'm not an expert on insurance.

You can get the pill to control mood swings, period pain, spots, head aches, anger, lots of things.

Go back to your gyno and I am sure she will be happy to change the prescription. It's not like she is getting you anything with a street value. It's only the pill. She will come up with some minor thing and you can go from there.

Good Luck!! xx
