I'm considering going on the pill, but I'm not fully sure what happens. Do I have to stop taking it for a week, or something, to have my period? I'm confused where to get it from too.

Can any of you give me some advice on where to get the pill, and how to take it? Thanks :]

A female reader, HannahBAB3S United Kingdom +, writes (16 March 2010):

you get the pill by going to your doctors and asking for it and they will do some test and ask a few questions.

you start taking the pill on the first day you come on your period so that you dont have to use any extra contraception, make sure you take the right day on the pack and then one the 21 pills have gone you have a 7 day break were you have your peiod and once that 7days is up you start taking the again.

hope this helped :)

eyeswideopen agony auntxylplxym was probably thinking of the Morning After pill, which is something you won't have to worry about if you do get on birth control pills. It's very easy to be against contraceptives when you aren't the one who has to carry and deliver a baby.

xylplxym is completely wrong. The pill does not cause abortions. Either he's trying to influence your decision or has gotten his facts very very wrong.

The pill works by stopping your body releasing an egg. As a baby can only be made with both a sperm and an egg, then no abortion can take place because there is no egg and therefor no baby present.

Obviously, as with all methods of contraception, it sometimes fails. If an egg does get released (very unlikely) and you do become pregnant, the pill will have no effects on your baby.

good luck x x x x

Okay don't write me off for being a guy but I really have to tell you two things you ladies left out or glossed over. First of all I have to ask, how okay are you with abortion? Going on pill causes abortions, so if you are not okay with it, you may want to consider that. Secondly, the pill will actually increase your risk of getting STDs by quite a substantial amount. So really, even if you are preventing pregnancy, you need to get checked routinely for all STDs if your going to have sex. And note I said all, because many STDs have no noticable symptoms and may are viruses that have no cure.

These are just a few things I thought you ought to know before you take it. Though I realize its been a day so probably have already. And for the record I am a practicing Catholic and therefore totally against conctraception. However I am not going to try and change your mind about it, thats not what I'm here for. All I have done is tell you what will happen. That was your question wasn't it?

You don't need a parent to go with you, no matter what age you are, it's all confidential.

Go to your doctor, tell him you'd like to be put on the pill. He'll ask a few questions before he agrees (it's very unlikely he won't agree, only if it poses a threat to your in health in some way).

You start taking it the day of your next period. That way you'll be protected from the start. For the next 21 days you'll take it, then have a 7 day break. During that break you'll have your period. After the 7 days are up, you start your next pack.

If you don't fancy having your period that month, carry on the next pack straight away without the seven day break, that way you won't come on. It will make your periods a lot less painful, lighter and shorter, also. Sometimes there are some side effects such as spotting of blood, throwing up, headaches or weight gain, but they are rare and will go away after a few packets.

Your doctor should tell you everything anyway, even if he doesn't, everything is explained in the leaflet in the pack.

Hi hun, Here in the UK you wont need your parents permission as your over 16. You get the pill free on prescription from your GP they usually give you 6 months supply so you wont have to constantly visit.

There are many options available includung an implant, injections and the pill itself. With most of the brands(there are loads) you take 21 pills each month then have 7 days when you dont take any, during those 7 days your period comes then when it stops you start the next set of 21 pills. Your doctor will explain everything to you and if your not sure just ask.

Remember the pill only protects against pregnancy not STD's so your boyfriend is going to need to were a condom. And if your on anti-biotics for anything the pill wont work whilst your taking both.

Its a really good decision to go on the pill, good for you!

Hi there,

First of all there are many different birth control pills, many diffferent strengths. This is a decision that you should make with your own physician. There are so many options out there you need to find the right one for you. Keep in mind, that pills do not stop any sexually transmitted diseases!!

High Five to you for wanting to protect yourself from unwanted pregnancy!!! Good Luck!
