Depends what kind of man he is. Most wouldn't even look at the plant - just grab it, pay for it and give you it.
We don't know anything about the context - is he courting you, or with you? Is he yours, or someone else's? Hard to comment without more detail. But for most men, label would mean zero, in my opinion. If he is the poetic type, though, he could be trying to tell you that he is in some way cut up inside. Only you might know how.

That he thought you would like the plant? They are quite pretty, with the flowers looking like little hearts. I believe they are related to fuschias.

Firstly, how do you know if it was half way through for him? Maybe it was all already over for him ... That is the mostly likely explanation.
Next one is that for some reason he felt bad about what he was doing, and didn't want to continue.
Next one is he had a physical problem that meant he couldn't carry on.
But my money is on No. 1 ...

 It could be that your sex life isn't what it use to be, so maybe spice things up in the bedroom and see if that helps, or try asking him what is wrong!
If it keeps happening maybe it would be a good idea to consult a doctor as this can be a problem and will probably be fixed using Viagra.
