A female United States age 30-35, *aree02 writes:

Im 16 years old and I've been seeing this guy who is 5 years older than me. We are afraid to tell my parents about us because of the age difference, which shouldn't be a problem. His family is friends with mine and he's been friends with my sister for years. I need help because we don't know how to tell my parents and we really want to be a couple already.

A female reader, katatonik United States +, writes (2 December 2008):

katatonik agony auntI don't know what state you live in, but in Califonia the age of consent to have sex is 18. If you are still a minor under your state laws, your parents are likely to be quite concerned about the age difference because it's actually a CRIME if you and this guy do anything sexual together. 5 years is not that big a difference when you're 20 and he's 25, but it's a big difference if he's an adult and you're legally a minor. Please be careful.

Becca64 agony auntFirstly... thats not a big age gap- even in your age..

and also, I am in the same situation... but worse.

I am also 16 and my boyfriend is 26 :)

I still dont see that as a big age gap.

I love him so what does age matter?

Tell them slowly, I would suggest one person alone, at a time you know you wont be disturbed. If they care about you they will understand.
