I have tried apologising to him for my part in this (I had to do this via text because he would not answer the phone) but he has so far not replied. I have seen him in the street once but he will not talk to me and walked past and would not look at me. I feel I need to atone to move on, and i would like us to be friends. Can anyone see a way forward?

We all heal differently.
Give the man space to heal his way. Can the two of you be friends? That remains to be seen. You said what you had to say. You cannot browbeat the man into accepting your apology and being happy with it.
I hope that you can be friends, because I like happy endings. But, the truth is, it may never happen. As long as you tried your best 'to atone', that is all you can do. The ball is in his court. Hold your head up high and keep moving forward.
Best wishes.
