 Swallowing is definitely way better. Aside from the psychological component, swallowing it as it comes out just feels much nicer.
No reasonable guy will consider spitting to be an insult, or even having them finish off outside of your mouth - so long as you don't give "It's disgusting" as a reason. Disappointed, yes, and he'll probably try to persuade you to swallow, but he won't be insulted. Still, I'm told the taste is more bearable when swallowing, and I know swallowing feels better from the guy's side.
Keep a party cup and some tissue handy if you're going to spit.
If he's asking for blowjobs, and you're new to giving them, ask him to avoid caffeine and alcohol for a few days before. Tell him to eat some pineapple every day, and limit his intake of meat. It should improve the taste a bit.
