Plexi agony aunthi sweetie,

PCOS is a hormonal imbalance. before you try drastic measures such as shaving or waxing why not attempt to balance your endocrine ( hormonal) system through nutrition and lifestyle changes

-drink 6-8 glasses of water every day

-increase your intake of high fiber whole food ( lots of fruits and vegetables)

-make sure your diet incorporates lots foods high in EFA's( essential amino acids.....crucial for a healthy hormonal system) such as olives, avocados, olive and flax seed oil, cold water fish such as cod and salmon. Supplement with fish liver oil or omega 3 pills( both high in EFA's)

Limit radiation in your environment( tv, cellphone, computer). if you use a laptop never hold it on your lap when you are using it and swich it to offline when you walk away from it, if you must use a cellphone please get an earpiece to limit the amount of radiation received

A homonal imbalance can also be caused by a less then healthy liver since the liver is in charge of recycling your homones and maintaining healthy levels. you can support your liver by avoiding alcohol, concentrated sugar foods, eating liver supporting foods such as beet roods and leaves and drinking dandelion tea.

Also try to get lots of exercise as that's how you keep your immune system healthy.

A female reader, k_c100 United Kingdom +, writes (31 July 2009):

k_c100 agony auntI think its a really bad idea to shave your arms, it will only grow back worse and then you will end up having to shave them forever. I know it seems tough right now but I promise you, in a few years your hormones will settle down and the hair wont be as bad. As you get older body hair starts to slow down in its growth (once you get into your 20's) and eventually you wont even notice it anymore. But if you decide to shave your arms now, then the hair will never go away and it will be a problem for the rest of your life instead of being a problem for the next few years.

Like army medic said, you need to get some medication for it. Hormone based medication will level your hormones out and stop the unwanted excess hair. Go see your doctor and they will be able to help you.

I used to be so self-conscious about my body hair when I was your age, I used to get bullied for having hair on my hands, arms and upper lip. I made the mistake of shaving the hair on my hands 5 years ago and I'm still having to deal with that error now, it grew back darker and thicker, and now it grows at a much faster rate! Dont be tempted to do it, it really does make things worse! Get the doctor to help with some proper medication, dont try dealing with it yourself because it will be something you regret when you are older!

I hope this helps and good luck!

A reader, anonymous, writes (31 July 2009):

PCOS increases the levels of the male hormone testosterone in your body which in turn increases the amount of body hair, but the contraceptive pill can reduce these levels, and subsequently reduce the amount of body hair. So my first question would be to ask you if you're on any medication for the condition?

As for shaving, I'd advise you to listen to your mother. Mothers nearly always know best and will always have your best interests at heart. You might not agree, but that's what teenagers do!
