Should I expect more than this?

A female United Kingdom age 41-50, anonymous writes:

Hi I have been down a bit for the past while over my boyfriends friends and family. I feel like I dont fit in with them no matter how hard I try. The friends are very laddy and sometimes dont say hello to me - they rarely ask how I am and usually leave me out. I only ever see them on drunken nights out. My boyfriend tried to meet up on double dates with a couple of them and their girlfriends but they keep finding excuses. I feel hurt by this. His family mean well but have no manners and little social cop on, so they tend to say the wrong thing, but they do all love each other. I am worried that we will end up relying on my friends and family for support and I also wonder should I be expecting more?

A male reader, rocknroll United States +, writes (28 May 2009):

I think you need to get the inside scoop. Talk to your boyfriend about it. Maybe you are coming off in some way that they are reserved. Maybe everyone knos that you are highly intelligent and they can't compete with someone like this. it could be many reasons this is happeneing. With your mate and close friends, you might be able to break this bubble and get over the apparent cold shoulder you are feeling.

I remember hearing a story about a guy who was in your shoes. I do not recall exactly what the situation was, but to ease tensions, he purposely fell on his face, giving the image he was human, and this broke the ice that they began to talk as if they were no different from one another.

Good luck!
