Priorities! My shift I was meant to work? Cover another shift? Or my friend and the concert?

Question - (4 April 2012) 1 Answers - (Newest, 4 April 2012)
A female United States age 30-35, *iralight writes:

A friend from work asked me to go to a show with him tomorrow night.

I really want to go, because I'm new to this town and I don't really have any friends here yet (apart from the people I see every day at work) and I have trouble making friends/knowing what to do with friends.

So of course there is the introverted part of me that just doesn't want to go. But I'm trying to ignore that here because I think it's probably healthy (for me) to go out once in a while instead of going to work, coming home, watching tv/staring at my computer, sleeping, repeat. But I digress. The problem is, I already work tomorrow night, til closing.

And on top of that, the person I asked to cover my shift is out of town AND asked me to cover THEIR shift for tomorrow too. The concert's not til 8 so I can work the person's shift who asked me to cover for them and part of mine, but I would still need to find someone to cover for me, or just call in sick.

And I realized that I was chatting with my friendly manager while closing tonight and I told them that this person had asked me to go to a show with them tomorrow. So now I'm afraid that if I call in sick they'll know I'm not really sick because I made that dumb mistake. Anyways, help! I'm not good at this situations, because I'm usually a pretty solitary person! O_O

aunt honesty agony auntI think you should go to the show, you only live once, ask your manager is there anyway that you can get the time off, explain to them that you are new to town and you don't know many people and it means a lot to you.
