Okay I am 12yrs to and I know how you feel that often happens to me too. They say emo=emotional but i can mean a lot of things. Right emo=emotional but they dont always wear black or worship the devil. People say they are harmful kids that cut themselves but that is just a stereotype so just look at it this way ... emo's are emotional they usually have many problems like with family and they do some bad harmful things to overcome emotions and depression and yes, many of them do cut themselves sometimes they call themselves emo because they cut themselves and most of the time yes they are emo because they cut themselves so people have their ways of defining it personally I say that no, I dont say that it is a stereotype for people to say emos cut themselves it is very true emos are emotional, cut themselves and they dont wear black so please just take it my way.....thanks

2. a ''look'' a stlye of clothing and that kind of thing

3. somebody who is over emotional or an emotional wreck, we often wear dark clothes, but not always.

A female reader, anonymous, writes (7 April 2008):

Emo is a way to describe an appearance to me. It's a generalization, like prep, or goth. In stead of secribing exactly what the person looks like, you can say just say "they're emo." Which means they wear skinny jeans, have black hair (possibly with some other colour in it) black shirts... possibly mixed with small amounts of colour. Now, of course this is just a generalization, and you definately just have to sort of learn on your own who is "emo" and who isn't. You'll eventually learn the signs (I consider myself emo, however I have an amazing life, would never cut myself, and certainly am not emotional. In my opinion, it's a way to describe the way someone looks.)

A female reader, anonymous, writes (5 April 2008):

Emo is short for Emotional or Emotive.

Emo is a fashion that I like to call "Colourful Darkness". It can include a lot of black but at the same time, a lot of colour too. Emo can also be an attitude where people can act over the line, describing their life as miserable and also depressing. Bands sometimes follow this line to gain more fans and attention but at the same time, disagree with any of the bad stuff in Emo attitude. Suprisingly enough, Emo followers can be really sociable and have great friendships. It purely matters on the frame of mind the person in question has.

Hope this helped! x

A reader, anonymous, writes (4 April 2008):

Emo means emotional.

A lot of people associate emo with self harm but not all emos cut themselves.

Most 'emos' are quite, shy and like to keep to themselves.

A male reader, El Dente United Kingdom +, writes (4 April 2008):

El Dente agony auntEmo is emotional, people who are generally miserable.

Emos are normal people who just generally feel bad. The thing with emo is that it gets the wrong label. People who dye their hair black and wear black and listen to bands like MCR and Panic!are labelled and call themselves emo aren't actually emos, they're posers, call them Scene kids, they make out like they have awful lives when they're just attention seekers.

Real emos keep themselves to themselves and dont pose and say that theyre emo, they're generally fine.

Hope I've Helped

A male reader, anonymous, writes (4 April 2008):

I might add to this that emos generally have the worst taste in hair-style and facial care.

Honestly half the time it looks like they strayed out of an Anime cartoon or ran their heads over with a hedge clipper. Or just could be bothered to brush their hair in the morning.

Luckily almost all grow out of this annoying phase and eventually evolve a much better sense of hair-care.

A male reader, anonymous, writes (4 April 2008):

As stated by others, it means emotional and originally referred to a type of music. Nowadays it is a mostly negative term used to describe people who wear black, and is frequently associated with self harm.

It might be worth mentioning that some people try to dress or act as what is called emo for attention, or as a cry for help as can happen with self harm. Or to fit in, in situations where it isn't viewed as a negative thing.

Its merely another term like jock, prep, nerd, etc. It could be said to be similar to goth.

A reader, anonymous, writes (4 April 2008):

Some people are very small minded about this and go, ''Oh emos just cut themselves and cry''. This is not the case.

Emo stands for emmotional, or emmotional rock. Usually an emo would dress in black, or in a very different/eccentric way. They either want to stand out, or hide back into the crowd and are pretty shy. Yes, a lot of emos do self harm, but you've got to remember not to generalize - which is what these 'categorys of people' do.
