 You need to get some clarification on what he meant, does he mean you will always be important in his life, or does he mean he can't live without you as a girlfriend in his life?
Approach the subject of you getting back together with him, see how he reacts. Is he enthusiastuc about it? Maybe he doesn't want a relationship right now but would like to give it another go in the near future?
