How would you feel if a pit bull came into your yard & killed your dog? Would you feel that you had the right to hurt the pit bull in that situation? Yes probably. Keep your dog in your own damn yard. If you can't do that then I suggest you don't have a dog. I don't see what your problem is, this should be common sense & common courtesy for your neighbors.

Stayc63088 agony auntI love dogs. You said you love animals and dogs. Imagine Lucy playing outside and another neighbor's dog just comes over and attacks her. What would you do? Most likely call the police on it. I understand where you are, my dog did the same thing. But it is not the other dog's fault! He is minding his own business. Nor is it the owner's fault, he wants his dog to be protected when in his own yard. There is nothing wrong with that, it makes perfect sense. I imagine I would be quite pissed if a dog was allowed to come into my own yard and hurt my dogs. Just don't let her out without a leash. Simple. Please don't be mad at your neighbor's dog, he/she didn't do anything.

He's got a right to have a fragile wimpy dog if he wants. He has the right to let it loose in his own yard without someone else's dog coming over and posing a threat to it.

I know the animal control person was probably just trying to scare you, but technically it sounds like the other dog owner is right. If your dog goes over into his yard and hurts his dog, then your dog is 100% in the wrong.

Set a Good Example

As a dog owner, you are responsible not only for your own dog's well being, but for the status of dogs everywhere. One irresponsible dog owner in town can make life difficult for dog owners all over. Owning a friendly, clean, well-mannered dog reflects positively on the species and may help protect our rights to own companion animals.

Respect Your Neighbors

Not everyone will love your dog as much as you do. Keep your dog on your property. Don't force your dog's company on a neighbor who isn't comfortable with dogs.

Don't Leave Leavings

Always carry a plastic "baggy" or two with you when you walk your dog to pick up any waste it leaves behind, then dispose of the waste properly. Failure to clean up after your dog is disrespectful to your neighbors.

Respect Local Laws

Heed the laws regarding dog ownership in your city or county. These may include registration, leash laws and nuisance barking laws. Failure to obey the laws in your area may not only result in the loss of your dogs, but may also infringe upon the rights of others in your area.

First, if your dog does kill his dog, and your dog returns to say either into the house or in back yard, they neighbor)would be tresspassing if they enter your property, and if you feel threatened, you have a right to defend yourself.

I think the animal guy was just trying to scare you into taking appropriate action.

Most cities; townes and counties have laws that dogs must be on a leash, otherwise, hefty fines can be given to the owner. So do the right thing, respect others rights, and keep your dog secured to your proterty, eith by leash, or fenced in.

A female reader, Tisha-1 United States +, writes (9 May 2008):

Tisha-1 agony auntHi, I have a dog too, and I have an 'invisible fence' which keeps him inside our yard. I love my dog too, and I don't want him to be out there wandering around the neighborhood, possibly terrorizing other dogs or cats and other pets, or worry about him getting hit by a car.

You have to realize that you are responsible for what your dog does, and be a good pet owner. Some dogs, and I'm not saying yours does any of these things, some dogs if left unattended will dig where they're not supposed to, pee and poop on plants and garden beds. I always walk my dog on a leash round the neighborhood, and pick up any poos right away with a bag, for a couple of reasons. One is that no one should have to have another dog's poo in their yard, another is that it is unfair to leave poo out where someone could step on it, and finally, flies lay their eggs in it and breed more flies. Not a good thing at all.

There are leash laws and restrictions in place for a reason. Your dog might be the sweetest dog in the world, but could scare or knock over a small child just by being playful.

My parents had neighbors who would just let their dog out, and this dog would wander around the neighborhood, knocking over trash cans, pooing in other people's yards and also would attack the mailman. Very irresponsible owners, those. The entire block had to go pick their mail up at the post office because the mailman was rightly terrified of being attacked.

If you're letting your dog wander the neighborhood, I'm sorry to have to report to you, you are asking for all kinds of trouble, and it's not your neighbor's fault. It's your responsibility to make sure the dog is properly contained within her own boundaries, either through a proper fence (which can be expensive) or with an electronic boundary (less expensive) using an underground wire and/or collar.

So your neighbor is not being a dumbass, he is terrified that your dog will hurt his, and rightly so. Please try to understand this from the perspective of a smaller animal, okay? I'm not trying to be mean, I'm trying to help you understand the importance of being a responsible pet owner.

So get a proper containment system, either an above ground fence or one of the electronic systems that would work really well with a lab and retriever mix. Or just take her out on a leash.

Good luck, and don't blame your neighbor or his dog for this, it's up to you to make sure your dog stays in your yard!

sexseahot agony auntHonestly, I don't like other animals in my yard either. I think if a dog is going outside, it should stay in it's own yard. I'm sure there really may not be anything wrong with your dog being playful. But just remember, yours is a lot bigger than his and sometimes that's just dangerous in itself. If your dog plays too rough with the other, something could happen and it WOULD be your fault. To be on the safe side, you should probably put your dog on a leash when she goes outside.
