A female Ireland age 41-50, anonymous writes:

Hi there,

For the past few months I have been working with somebody on a project. He isn't my usual type and there is about a ten year age gap, (hes 40) and he is senior to me, but we started to get on really well. I enjoyed his company and will happily stand and chat and chat to him whenever we see each other. As the months have gone on, i started to really like him and we constantly tease each other and take the mickey. he makes me laugh. There has never been any untoward or sexual comments though. its all been good clean fun. i didn't even know if he was single or not.

There was the company party two weeks ago and I went and he was there. It took ages for us to get talking, but he saw me and came over and hugged me. We carried on talking. People told me he wasn't drunk, but i honestly think he was as he was getting all silly and hyper. There were some friends and family members of his out with him too and it was nice to meet his cousins. We carried on talking and talking in the club, arm touching, and laughing. When it was time to go, we hugged, a peck on the cheek, and then, we kinda both moved in for a 'mwah!' on the mouth. i don't know how that happened. i felt very embarrassed, but by the time i could wonder what was happening, he moved in to kiss me, but the second i saw him do it i pulled away and said something silly like 'we'll see how it goes!' then i realised i was holding his hand, so i dropped it and went to go home. he came after me to ensure i could get home safely, then his friends rallied round to see i was safe walking, but i said i had a taxi booked. i felt very confused by it all and was shocked it had happened, but it made me realise how much i actually liked him.

I was DREADING work, but i saw him ( i was with colleagues) and he said hi and was really just...normal with me.. like ' hey, did you get back okay, oh i was so hungover! i drank more than i thought! i had headache next day!' etc. Ive NOT seen him alone since - only in public areas, and its all been very normal. completely back to normal - mickey taking, telling each other to shut up, raised eyebrows, laughing, etc. Either that or we act seriously about our work.

I'm totally confused by it all. What do we do now? I feel kind of embarrassed to ask him or say anything - he is senior to me and i'm on a temp contract. I'm not going to be trying to make any inappropriate moves on him in open plan public office! But i feel that it's the elephant in the room. i wonder if he even remembers doing it, or what he MEANT by it. ive since wondered if i imagined it, or took it the wrong way! was it a drunken thing or was he trying to say something by it?

Advice please!

Sounds like might be interested but is feeling awkward about it just as you are. I would just continue to have pleasant work appropriate interactions with him. If he sees that you are comfortable even after the kiss and he's interested he will probably broach the topic with you.
