 Well, for males just watch the movie American Beauty, that's the male mid-life crisis in a nutshell.
My aunt just turned forty and she got her belly button pierced and started sleeping with men in their twenties. That was her mid-life crisis.
I expect it's a little different for everyone.

 Not everyone gets one and not everyone who does gets it at the same age. Some times I think it's just an excuse to do something really really stupid anyway. Like guys who dump the wife who has started to show her age around the corners for a newer model, stuff like that.
