Met first love during exchange overseas, how can we get over each other?

Question - (19 November 2010) 3 Answers - (Newest, 19 November 2010)
A female Taiwan age 36-40, anonymous writes:

I met my ex-bf during exchange in Europe, we were each others' first serious love. The time when we were together was amazing. But since we are from countries that are half the globe apart, we had no choice but to break up after our exchange.

It's been 3 months since we parted, we still have strong feelings towards each other, but moving geographically together will not be a possible option for either of us at least in a year. We both will be graduating from university this year and we both are not sure now about what we want in the future. I may move to Europe for further studies or he may move to Asia for some job experience, but we both are not sure. Also, we don't want to affect each others' choice in our life path.

It hurts so bad that we still love each other but we broke up. Even though we still talk to each other quite often, we have to hide our emotions and speak to each other like "friends". We both have tried seeing other people, but we both admitted that we're not ready for anyone right now.

I know that both of us have to move on, but I can't seem to do so. I know it's the same for him too, he cried a lot last time when I proposed if we should just disappear from each others' lives. I'm still in love with him and I feel like I'll love him more and more as time goes by even though we cannot be physically together. What can I do to move on from him?

Actually I'd never want him to disappear from my life, but I just don't see I can just treat him like a friend.. Also, we both would like to visit each other next year, but we're not sure if we should do so since it'll mean another tearful, heartbreaking goodbye when we part.

Denise32 agony auntCerberus Raphael has given you very good advice.

I would add one thing: You have a computer. Do you have Skype installed on it? If not, I strongly recommend downloading this program. Also, ask your boyfriend to get it on his computer as well. It costs nothing, and you can both see and talk to each other live, any time - allowing for the time difference, of course........good luck!

A reader, anonymous, writes (19 November 2010):

you could start a long distance realtionship however that may in the long term be a bit like teasing yourself as you wont get that intensity together again.

other than that try find someone else and just give it time.

A male reader, Cerberus_Raphael Sweden +, writes (19 November 2010):

Cerberus_Raphael agony auntYou can always start a Long Distance Relationship and meeting each other will be something to look forward too instead of something to fear due to a heartbreaking goodbye. Then after a couple of years, if your love is true and strong, you can be together after you have both completed studies.

I hope that helps.
