A female United Kingdom age 30-35, anonymous writes:

Hiya :) i've got a question about contraception and I was hoping you could help me out! Basically i'm 19, and since starting uni I went on the pill.

I was on it once before, but stopped taking it after I broke up with my long term boyfriend, for obvious reasons! My mum is totally against the pill, as she claims it made her gain weight. Now its true that when I was on it before, I did gain about half a stone, and coming off it I dropped it again, but I just thought that was due to healthy eating and excercise.

Now, since going to uni i've been very weight concious due to the fact that for most of my life i've been very active (horse riding and stable work every day, plus waitressing) and at uni I wouldn't have any of that. Also I am drinking a lot more there! I keep my diet very healthy but never the less I still put on about half a stone in my first term, which has upset me a lot!

My mum found my pill packet, and immediatly was not happy about it. So i've been off it for 2 weeks and already dropped 4lbs. So maybe there is some truth in what she's saying.

First question, has the pill ever made any of you gain weight? And did you ever find a pill which didn't? My doctor assured me it just made your appitite increase, but i've not been eating much at all.

Secondly, of course i'd always use a condom, but I don't feel fully secure with just that. Can you please reccomend a good contraception which will not make me gain weight?

From my own reaserch i've only found the IUV won't do this, but i'm a little relectant to have anything like that :/ the pill would be perfect for me if it wern't for this annoying side effect! Thanks :)

dr.2.be agony auntHow about giving the NuvaRing a try? Its a flexible colorless ring that you insert into your vagina every month and take it out the week of your period. I was on NuvaRing for awhile when I had a longterm boyfriend and it gave me no problems. You can't feel it inside of you and it doesnt interfere with sex. I didn't gain any weight or experience any adverse side effects while using the ring so I would suggest it to anybody who doesn't want to or can't go on the pill. I tried the pill but it gave me really bad stomach issues to the point I couldnt keep anything down.

On a side note, I would not worry about the college weight gain. Everybody gains a little weight in college. Its just your body adjusting to the change in lifestyle. As long as you keep eating right, and watching your intake of alcohol, you will not balloon out of control. I know I gained some weight during my first year in undergrad....it was hardly noticeable though and my pants still fit the same. Just try to be as active as you can. Go for a run a few days a week or hit the gym and you will soon lose the weight that you gained.
