QUESTION FOR THE GUYS (and Girls if you can relate): Sorry this might be a bit graphic but here goes...Ok well, I'm 18 and I've had sex with a woman (26 yr-o). So she is the first woman I've ever had sex with. The first time we had sex I enjoyed it and everything but when I tried to go down on her she didn't let me. She didn't even let me finger her. So for a while I was clueless until...I smelt a fishy odour. So I figured maybe she didn't get a chance to wash and didn't want me to go there. So I said fine, maybe next time. (This is just what I was thinking at the time, I didn't say any of this to her).

Ok so I went to see her yesterday and we had sex again, but this time she let me go down on her and she let me finger her...again I smelt the fishy odour. And this prevented me from giving her oral properly or even fingering her properly. I will enjoy the sex a lot more without the fishy odour putting me off and I want to pleasure her and give her my 100%. But I can't because the smell puts me off that much.

So I wanted to nip it in the bud since we are supposed to be girlfriends and I asked her what the reason is.

She has slept with women before and her response was that the vagina has a certain odour and because I am inexperienced I wouldn't know that. I accepted that and yes I know the vagina has a certain odour, but is it the smell of fish? I can't stand the smell, its very off putting.

So my question is: Is it normal to have a STRONG fishy odour coming from your vagina?

Is the vagina supposed to smell fishy?

My vagina DOES NOT smell fishy and has no unpleasant odour. So is it that I am abnormal because my vagina is odourless?

Does her vagina smell fishy because of an infection or is it due to poor hygiene? I must ask because the only time my vagina smells is when I haven't had a bath.

Girls, does your vagina smell fishy or is it like mine odourless?

Guys, have you had a similar experience? What did you do to help the situation?

Am I the abnormal one here?

Girl please, your vagina isn't suppose to smell fishy, it is suppose to smell normal. She has a vaginal infection or a std she needs to go to the doctor for treatment.

Leave that vaginal alone until she gets checked out!!

I've been wondering about this subject as well. I'm 18 years old, and I've never had a girlfried. (Owing to the fact of horror stories and probably because of myself also.) But I've also been wondering if there should be a smell or not, because after reading this subject, I've seen kind of a mixed bag of answers. But I guess there should be like a non-offensive smell right? Correct me if I'm wrong please.

Believe it or not a having her drink a 2 to 3 glasses of red wine before sex will help but she should still get checked out to make sure everything is clean...

Also citrus fruits in the diet as well as eating less fried food helps so does asparagus.

Your girlfriend may have bacterial vaginosis. Bacteria in the vagina is normal. Bacterial vaginosis happens when there is an overgrowth of bacteria in the vagina. The vagina is not supposed to smell like fish. That is not normal!!! Please tell your girlfriend to go to see gynecologist immediately. If left untreated, Bacterial vaginosis can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease, tubal pregnancy, or pre-term labor. Bacterial vaginosis is the most common vaginal infection, and can easily be treated with an antibiotic called flagyl. Hope this helps.

This may make me weird but I find the smell of a women's vagina a great turn on in particular the "fishy" smell. As for the cause I've heard many different theories. One girlfriend I had said that her vagina always smelled of tuna fish for a few days before her period while another said that eating fish made her smell of fish down below.I have also found that the fishy smell can vary from slight to strong however every vagina doesn't smell like fish so it depends on how much you like your current girlfriend as to whether youwant to continue to have sex with her.

A male reader, anonymous, writes (13 April 2007):

I enjoy going down on my girlfriend. Very rarely does she smell offensive. I just went down on her this morning, and because I was pressed for time, I want to do it again later. So far, I have been with a total of 10 women. I think I have probably gone down on 8 or 9 of them. One of them always smelled offensive, and I was inexperienced, and just figured that's the way it was. I really didn't like doing it... and didn't do it for very long. Other than her, I have rarely had any bad experiences. But all of them have smelled a little bad from time to time. When that happens, I usually just spend a little time on the clit, and then switch to my hand and gradually move back up to kiss her breasts and face. I save going down on her for another time. I do it as subtly as possible, so as not to embarras her. The fish smell is not as normal as some on this have made it out to be. I don't know what causes it, whether it's hormonal levels, cleanliness, or something else... but MOST of the time, it is a very pleasant, non-stinky experience. I suggest you try it on a few other ladies, and see if you agree with me. If it always smells fishy, and you can't get used to it, then do something else, I guess -- although, knowing you have satisified a woman by going down on her, is probably the greatest pleasure you can experience... I don't care if the person doing it is a man or a woman... it is amazing to hear a woman moaning as you pleasure her this way. I hope it works out for you. Try not to embarras your friend though. Maybe you could try having a bath together sometime, and then dry her off, and go down on her fresh, and see if that helps. My current girlfriend never uses soap on her vagina, as she says it can cause infections... but she rarely smells or tastes bad. Anyway, I hope this helps. Most importantly though, have safe fun! Good luck!

A word of advice to the poor lass who fancies herself a lesbian but hates the smell of p----y, you might want to reconsider your sexual preferences if you don't like going down on a woman 'cause sweetie, that's one of the few ways you can actually get another woman off during sex.

birdynumnums agony auntWomen are given a gazillion different answers when it comes to douching. Mothers and Doctors will tell them that it's a self-cleaning orafice and to leave it alone. What a load of horse manure. It will not hurt your vagina to rinse it out daily in the shower. Water is Ph Neutral and the vagina will replenish its own moisture. You can do this after your period and after sex and there will be no odour. If you have had antibiotics or have a varied sex life (don't forget the condoms), you can get yeast and other infections that will cause itching and odour. If eating (or applying) an active yogurt culture does not help, see your Doctor! There you go, Way more information than you needed!

A reader, anonymous, writes (23 March 2007):

A fishy ordor is typically caused by an overgrowth of bacteria that normally occurs in the vagina and is called vaginosis....it usually is accompanied by itching, discharge, and sometimes painful intercourse...

She needs to see a dr for a vaginal suppository that can get rid of the infection....it is not always caused by poor hygene, except that it can be avoided by wearing white cotton underwear, and wiping from front to back after elimination....

Sometimes semen in the vagina, can cause this same smell, over douching can cause vaginosis as well.

So, yeah, this is not "normal" in that she has an infection more than likely.

Ponungalungb agony auntWhen I mentioned that all women have an odor, I didn't mean that the odor was offensive. I imagine if I had my nose between your legs, I'd smell something. LOL.

You know the old saying "If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen"? Well, the same thing applies here. If you can't stand the smell, get out of the "Y". So, yes, I'd say don't go where wise men fear to tread.

I have a question for you. How do two women have sex if you don't have oral sex? Strap on tool? Color me curious yellow.

Thanks for your answers (very funny Punongulungb) but is it actually normal for her vagina to smell fishy?

Mine most definately doesn't. No seriously, I've never smelt like that before.Am I in the minority? If it is normal to smell fishy then I don't know how you guys do it.

So what shall I actually do about it? Just not go down on her?

I can relate I've only ate my girlfriend out only a four times percisley. It's been hell. She doesn't even know what a douche is; so maybe you guys can get an idea of how bad it is. The last time I had to stop because I gagged. I need to find a way to tell her.

A male reader, Ponungalungb United States +, writes (22 March 2007):

Ponungalungb agony auntI know where you're coming from (no pun intended). I was with a girl one night that just about tripped my gag reflex. This girl spread her legs and I saw a buzzard drop over. Once I caught a whiff of her crotch, I couldn't go any further. I made up some story about having to pick up some ice cream for my grandmother. I never went out with her again. I was about 18 or 19 at the time.

Every woman I've been with has had an odor. Most are not that offensive. . . but every now and then a real tuna boat comes my way. I don't have the heart to tell them they stink (some guys might think it smells great, who knows?), so I bow out gracefully. I figure they either have poor hygiene, or have something growing down there.

In either case, I'm not interested.

A reader, anonymous, writes (22 March 2007):

It depends how strong the smell is. A woman's pussy does have a small, particularly when she's turned on and wet, but my experience is that it varies depending on the time of the month, how often you've been having sex, and so on.

It could be that she has an infection but I'd say this is unlikely. See how things go, and if you don't enjoy the smell, don't lick her out.
