Is he just scared and will he ever come back around?

This situation is so strange to me, but I come looking for insight- anything- to help me understand his perspective. I have had a secret sexual relationship with this man for a few months now. We have actually only had sex a few times both knowing we shouldn't given the circumstances (I am separated but not divorced and he is a teacher at my son's school). I know he had feelings for me before we had sex, but I told him we couldn't go in that direction (feelings wise). It was a good set-up. We both had fun and a "no strings attached fling". The issue is that rumors of course started and although we both stand firm "that there is nothing going on" now there is nothing going on. It is as though he has been completely scared away, but I want to continue being with him. I have a hard time believing he would just stop wanting me or liking me. I know I should let it go, but we had so much fun together, So my question is "Is he just scared and will he ever come back around?"
