Is he avoiding me?

A female United States age 30-35, *itty_3 writes:

I gave this guy a holiday present before break, and he seemed delighted that i'd thought of him. The first time i saw him after was this morning, when he was perfectly friendly. however, in class later, i was sitting across from him and he usually glances at me from time to time and there's usually some eye contact, but today he didn't look at me once.

Is he avoiding me? I don't think i did anything wrong... maybe he didn't like the present...? i didn't get to see him open it, so i wouldn't know. he didn't seem freaked out by it, so i'm really confused. what is going on here and how can i make it all better?

A male reader, GrimmReality United States +, writes (7 January 2009):

GrimmReality agony auntI would venture a guess that this young man seems a little confused himself. Many men(especially young ones) have no mechanism for dealing with things like a present, cards, flowers, etc.

We simply are wired differently. YOU DID NOTHING WRONG! As a matter of fact, you went out of your way to show somebody that you care. I wouldnt feel too bad. My best guess is that he felt a little awkward at the outset, but the choice now is yours.....PLAY HARD TO GET! That will present him with a fait accompli and you will have your answer.

Hope this helps young lady
