Implanon trouble! Is this normal?

A female United Kingdom age 30-35, anonymous writes:

On the 9th of April 09 I had the implant inserted, since then I've had a dark brown discharge almost everyday from then, which is said to be normal. Some days I'd have nothing at all, some days it would come back.

Last week I had blood instead of dark brown discharge which I don't get anymore. I've had blood now for about 1 week, I've had 3 spots (which I ALWAYS get when i'm on my period, but which I haven't had since I had the implant inserted) and I've had terrible stomach pains (which I also get when I'm on my period). I'm wondering if this is my period? Is this normal? It's been over 4 months now, I'm wondering if this form of birth control is right for me, because I've also been having major mood swings and depression. Any advice and I'll be grateful! Thankyou x

I had similar reactions when i had the pill injected. I bled/spotted for months, felt nauseous constantly & started having panic attacks (mainly because i felt like throwing up 24/7 so i often felt the need to run to the bathroom - couldnt be indoors like in shopping centres etc) in the end i had to take anti depressants until the injection wore off.

Unfortunately implanon may not be the best option for you - but at least u can get it removed. It would be interesting to know whether u react to the oral pill? as i do react to it but obviously have more control over it than the injection. Personally I will never use the pill or injection again due to the severity of my symptoms but there are plenty of other options like caps, iuds etc. Might be worth seeing ur GP for advice.

If your cycle hasn't settled after three months it would be worth going back to your GP or family planning and asking for advice.

There are things they can give you to regulate your bleeding.

but just a really light bleed that would seem like brown discharge and then occasional heavier bleeding seems to be quite normal amongst the people i know who have an implant.

Only you know if it is right for you and if the trouble is worth it

Good Luck
