I know completely how you feel. I am an 18 year old male and am going away to university this fall. I am going to this new school alone, while a group of my best friends are going to the same University as each other which is 18 hours away from me. I am having an awful time dealing with the fact that I will not be able to see the people I love the most and the people I have turned to for almost 7 years of my life. I am terrified of the change, and even talking about it is quite hard, but change is necessary in order for growth to happen. It was put best as, "Don't cry because you are leaving, smile because you were there." The friends you had will never be lost, because if you really miss them you will be able to see them again.. Hope this helps and good luck with the change.

It'll be fine once you get in to a new routine. I had to move schools twice during high school and trust me, after the initial feelings of loss, you click with a new group and things fall in to place again. You can still stay in contact with your old friends too! Don't fret about it. You'll think it's a really good thing in no time.

I hated it at first, but now i think it has helped me grow as a better person. And i am now capable of making friends at the drop of a hat!

Cheer up!

It gets much easier!

A female reader, anonymous, writes (26 June 2008):

Oh, I had this same problem too.

The only thing that helped me is time. When I went into the new school, I barely had any friends, but over time I started getting more friends and got over my emotional attachement to my other school. What you can do is to ask all your friends for their phone numbers, so you can keep in contact with them. Also, if they're allowed, ask for their e-mail addresses. Take a pad with you when you do this so they don't give you lose paper that you might lose.

Good luck in your new school and I hope you feel better

Tremor agony auntKeep in contact!

Get all your friends emails addresses, phone numbers and postal addresses. Changing schools doesn't mean you have to lose all your friends.

Perhaps have a little going-away get together or something as well.
