I was wondering if there is any way to tell if a woman has an incompetent cervix before she actually loses the baby? I'm 17 weeks pregnant and I'm terrified that I might lose this baby! I know that most woman feel pressure on there bladder or pelvis, but by then it may be too late. Is there a way to maybe feel up inside the vagina and make sure the cervix is not dialating? I know this sounds stupid, but I miscarried my last baby at 8 weeks and I would hate to loose this one. I have not been diagnosed with an incompetent cervix, it's just one of the things I have been worrying about.

A female reader, Tisha-1 United States +, writes (19 February 2009):

Tisha-1 agony auntYou have seen your doctor, right? She's examined you and has established that your cervix is fine? That it wasn't an incompetent cervix that caused the miscarriage?

I'm sure that the miscarriage was very traumatic and made you very worried about this next pregnancy. I'm sorry that you had to go through that. You know it's funny, there have been a number of my friends who had miscarriages and who have gone on to have beautiful lovely healthy babies. I think you may be worrying yourself into a state for no good reason, and that you should make an appointment to get that cervix looked at. You can tell the gyn's office that you're worried about this.

And may I give you one more piece of advice? STAY OFF THE INTERNET!!! I'm serious. You can google this nine ways till Sunday and you will get 4,567,210 hits that indicate that your baby will have problems due to the initial miscarriage. Then you can find at least 774,932 sites that discuss the urgency of not using non-cotton underwear while pregnant. Oh and don't forget the 823,973 sites that list all the terrible things that can happen if you eat/drink/wear/smell/are near/don't take/do take something or other.

Speak with your doctor about your concerns, bring a list of questions so that you don't get flustered and forget, you can also bring a tape recorder so you don't have to write everything down.

If you know what your cervix feels like already, then you can conduct this internal exam. If you don't know, I'm not sure exactly what your internal exam would tell you.

Please, ask your medical professional for some help and guidance and advice here.

Congratulations on your pregnancy and I hope you see that doc soon, so you can stop worrying and start enjoying.

I've found a website that might give you some help here (and you can look at this one, it has medical information that has been reviewed by medical professionals): http://www.webmd.com/baby/guide/pregnancy-when-to-call-your-doctor

Take care.
