If an identical twin turns out to be gay/bi, would the other twin also be gay/ bi?

A female United States age 26-29, anonymous writes:

Lets say theres a pair of identical twins, and the one twin comes out, would the other twin also be gay or bi?

I'm just curious. I was watching the simpsons episode where patti comes out, and I was wondering if that would that make selma gay, too. When I was little and asked my mom what the word gay meant, she'd say it meant that their brains were wired a little differently, and that they liked people of the same gender. Since identical twins are one egg that split into two, wouldn't their brains be wired the same?

Sorry if this was offensive to someone in any way or if my moms explanation was wrong and it isn't how the brain is wired that determines if your gay or not.

Thanks! :)

Marieclaire: they're 5. I know they aren't duplicates one is the sweetest thing, the other is a little hell raiser.

Chigirl: i wasn't saying it was they're personality, just that thats how my mom explained it when I was 7. Its just the way i was taught i always thought it was a genetic trait.

Cmarieky: thank you :)

And I'm sorry to anyone else I offended. I was just curious because I thought it was a genetic trait and before this I thought identical twins had the same DNA. Now I know their DNA isn't exact. For the last time, I'm not saying they are the same person. I thought that your sexual orientation was a genetic thing. And genetics are completely different from personality. It was a question, i was curious, I'm sorry if i offended you.

To those of you are of you who are being really inconsiderate towards the poster bc she wants to know why and how certain things happen. Firstly you should consider her age. Now that is out of the way, the young girl obviously just wanted some scientific evidence that supports or rejects her theories and what she saw on tv. So honestly ppl give this poster a break. I can guarantee there are loads of things you all are oblivious to that someone can call you out for not knowing. Newayz poster....my previous post stands that there are several factors. Hope I've helped you some. Take care

chigirl agony auntTwins can also have different eye colour or hair colour or look different... one can gain weight while the other stays thin, one likes sports and the other not. Why should sexuality be any different, all of a persons personality in the end comes down to "how the brain is wired".

A female reader, anonymous, writes (15 July 2011):

There have been many psychological studies done on this topic in which the concordance rate of homosexuality in siblings is tested by comparing identical twins, fraternal twins, non-twin siblings raised in the same home v. those raised in separate homes and also adopted children raised in the same home with other kids. The concordance rate is the probability that if one person is gay, his or her brother or sister is also gay. It has been found fairly consistently that identical twins have around a 50% concordance rate, meaning that if one twin is gay half of the time the other twin is also gay. The concordance rate is on average lower for fraternal twins, then lower for non-twin siblings which indicates a strong genetic influence. There is also evidence that the environment plays a big role because the concordance rates are higher for people raised in the same home v. raised in separate homes, although it is not as strong of an effect as genetics.

I'm not trying to say identical twins are the same person i just always thought it was the way our brains were wired that defined whether someone was gay or not. I know twins will be completely different people, i have identical twin brothers. I always thought it would be a genetic trait that could be passed down, like whether you have blonde hair or blue eyes. I'm sorry if it came off that way but I know twins are very different people.

A female reader, cmarieky United States +, writes (15 July 2011):

There may be a genetic link that predispose babies to homosexuality. However, other factors greatly play a role. Such as the environment and upbringing. So sometimes there are several factors. Not necessarily true both twins will be gay bc as a biologist not all genetic traits are expressed in the offspring. But there is a high probability that if one parent dominantly carries a "gay" gene, then maybe one of four offspring will be gay "theoretically". Environmental....if the child goes to prison for 3or more consecutive years if its a he then he has over a 60% chance of engaging in same sex or gay behavior, but many times this is for survival and fear of not having sex with another man will get him brutally beaten or killed. Upbringing plays a role bc if there's a lot of gays around a child and the parent embraces the gays and once the child ages maybe 9yrs of age and a 13 year old gay expresses to the nine year old that they want to have a relationship and the parents are okay with it then there you have it. That 9yr old may definitely end up gay or bisexual as an adult. It isn't necessarily true that people choose to be gay. You can choose how to feel emotionally, you just automatically feel for people without wanting to. Similar to love, you can't tell your heart not to love the person u love. It's just a deep emotion that you react to.

A male reader, anonymous, writes (14 July 2011):

NO! The other twin will not automatically turn out to be gay. You have identical twins where one is married and the other never marries. One will be a drug addicted criminal and the other will be a Washington DC homicide detective or a Mississippi deputy sheriff. One will turn out to be a successful female attorney and the other will be a welfare receiving mother of 5 with 3 different babies daddy's. One twin turns out to be a very successful musician and singer in a popular band while the other can't sing a lick or play any kind of musicial instrument.

The above scenarios are true. I live in the USA

I can see exactly where you are coming from. Some scientist's believe that if one identical twin is gay, the othher one is bound too be gay too, because as you said, they are the same egg. But no, they are two different people, who just managed to be born on the same day, from the same egg, from the same mum and dad and look thhe same. It is possible that they both would be, but it isnt guaranteed.

A female reader, person12345 United States +, writes (14 July 2011):

person12345 agony auntIdentical twins aren't actually 100% identical. The DNA is slightly different and the way it expresses itself can actually be different between identical twins.

However that said, there is a genetic component to homosexuality. There are several geneticists who believe they may have actually found some of the genes. If one twin is gay it's highly likely the other will be as well, however given that gene expression can vary between even people with pretty much identical DNA, it's not guaranteed.

chigirl agony auntSince identical twins are not the same person, no, one being gay doesn't mean the other will be too.

If gayness was in your genes in the sense that all people with the same genes will be gay then entire families would be gay.

The jury is, by the way, still out on what "causes" homosexuality. All we know is that it is as natural as heterosexuality. Personally I think some are gay just like some of us like one type of music and some like another. It's just a difference in people.
