It's my senior year in high school and I can't enjoy it because I have my mind set on worrying about something stupid. I can't help but to think about my stomach making funny noises.

I can't focus on paying attention and doing my work because when the class is quiet I always worry about my stomach making noises because the other students can hear It and it's embarrassing.

I try to forget it and not worry about it because I'm the one making my stomach make noises. Me being nervous and worried is what makes my stomach make noises, it's not because of hunger or anythings it's nerves.

I'm tired of being worried about this I'm almost grown and I want to enjoy my senior year but I can't because of this. But when the class gets quiet and the room is quiet I start worrying and can't concentrate because I know my stomach is going to make noises and I lose focus on what I'm doing. How can I shake this off and get this worried stress out my brain?

I feel like that too, and i also don't like coughing around people either, as that is also noisy.

whatarewegonnado_withthemboys agony aunthii...

i can assure you that you are most definitely NOT alone!!! my stomach likes to do its own share of "talking" every now and then. most of the time, nobody knows it...because just like Candid Cally said, other people usually can't hear stuff like that...no matter how loud it sounds to you. and unless your classmates are extremely immature, they're probably not going to think veryy much of it if they DO happen to hear it. it might raise a few chuckles or something like that, buuut i wouldn't think that any well-rounded person would jump up and go, "ew!!! gross!!!" and go running for cover or anything like that.

you said that your stomach rumbling isn't because of hunger, buuut when it all comes down to it, that's a really good (and completely plausible) excuse. there have been times when i actually wasn't hungry, but my stomach started making noises that the people sitting close to me could hear, and i just said, "yeahh, i'm kind of hungry; i didn't have time to eat breakfast this morning," and left it at that. and they believed me and didn't think twice about it.

i really wouldn't worry about it too much. it's a totally natural thing that happens to everybody. and your senior year only comes around once (well, unless you flunk or something like that...hahaa). it's a time to just have funn with everything...tummy rumbles and all. ")

good luck, and God bless,

A female reader, Candid Cally United States +, writes (12 December 2011):

Most people around you cannot hear your stomach making noises and even if they can, they probably understand.

Some kinds of noises that our bodies make SEEM louder to us when we experience them, while other people around us can't hear them all. It has to do with our sense of how our body feels along with how our body conducts sound through its tissue. For example, if I tilt my head back and to one side, I hear a squeaking sound in my head that matches my pulse. Even though it is loud to me (it is coming from an artery in my neck and only happens when my head is in certain positions) the 'squee...squee...squee' noise is not audible to others standing near me. I've asked.

It sucks being self conscious about something like this. I had a friend in high school who worried about her underarms perspiring excessively (hyperhydrosis)...this anxiety in turn would cause her to perspire more. She used meditation and learned she could control her anxiety about perspiring, thus causing her to not perspire any more than she already had.

Finally, if your digestive system is making weird noises at almost the same time every day and you are experiencing feelings of anxiety and nervousness, you may be experiencing a physical response to something you have been eating. You may have a food allergy or intolerance that is causing the noise, and the anxious feeling. (I have celiac disease and for awhile I was lactose intolerant as a result. When I drank milk or especially when I ate ice cream I would bloat up badly...to the point that I felt like I couldn't breathe which would occasionally cause me to have panic attacks because I couldn't breathe right.). You need to determine whether the noises are truly causing you anxiety, or if the feeling of anxiety happens to come along with the noises.

Good grief man, you're not the only one! There are a dozen other people around you with the same problem. And let's get real here -- on the list of embarrassing things your body can do, tummy rumbles hardly rate. People aren't going to look down on you for that. Put yourself in their shoes -- they'd far rather that your stomach rumbles than you have loud or smelly farts, as an example. Chill!
