Question - (18 February 2010) 1 Answers - (Newest, 18 February 2010)
A female United States age 41-50, anonymous writes:

I apologize for the fact that this isn't about a romantic relationship but I hope you'll help me because I really need some advice, and I'm so lost.

I have a TEFL certificate and I'm DYING to go overseas and start a new life and a new career.

My goal is to go to Asia, or return to Mexico or Spain, where I have lived. Yeah... everyone and their dog knows it's difficult for US citizens to get work in Spain, I get it... but I'm gonna try because my heart is in Spain.

There's just one thing stopping me... I need to save up a substantial amount of money. It would be mad to go overseas without having a substantial amount of money saved up.

I'm substitute teaching now, and I absolutely HATE it. Administration and kids treat you like dog crap all day and you get paid nickels and dimes... not even a simple thank you. It's a crummy job and doesn't pay fairly. It sucks so much!!

My mom says that I'm qualified for many things and that I need to find a "bridge" job. In other words, a job that pays decently and has benefits/insurance until I have saved enough money to move abroad and teach English. She thinks I'm not trying hard enough to find one, but... I'm so lost, frustrated, and overwhelmed!

I promised my mom I would make a list of places to apply, but I have no clue where to start. I don't know what else to do but ask for help. I don't know what I'd be qualified to do or where to start searching!

I managed to find a part-time job (yay!!) but I don't start until April. It's gonna be long hours. Part of me is grateful for it but I really must find a decent job.

I live in a crummy small town where there is absolutely no opportunity. I have a BA in Spanish and I speak perfect Spanish. The only decent job I seem qualified for is Tefl, and in order to use it I have to save up enough $$$ to go abroad.

I'd like to go back to the university where I graduated and get job counseling but they charge a fee: $60 (I am ashamed to admit I went to a crappy podunk university and in my opinion I got ripped off. I'll never give them another cent!)

So... I don't know what to search for or where to search!!! I'm so lost. And worried about my future!

Thanks, if you can help me!!

A male reader, Dr.LanceMerryweather United Kingdom +, writes (18 February 2010):

Dr.LanceMerryweather agony auntIf you can forget Spain for a bit and concentrate on Asia, you should have no problem. Tefl teaching is in high demand and some educational bodies actually pay your fare and provide(basic) accommodation. You'll certainly be paid enough to live on but you'll never make money or get rich through Tefl. It's a lifestyle.

Scour the net for TEFL jobs in Asia, you should get loads of results. An excellent starting point is 'Golden Doorway' This site offers a free, downloadable/ printable do's, don'ts, pitfalls, rewards etc pamphlet.

Good luck and let me know how you get on. I'm just about to take the plunge myself, actually!
