Use more calories than you ingest.
Ie. try and cut down on junk food and do more exercise to get things started in both respects. Walking is a really good way to start, and running can lead on from there. I also play badminton and squash which are fun and sociable at the same time. There's not real quick fix which will be viable in the long term so best just start as you mean to go on.

There's a basic equation that you need to follow, and it's really simple. You only need to burn more calories than you consume.
Cutting out processed sugary snacks and junk food, fats, and soda is a big start.
You can add more veggies, ruffage (dark leafy greens), fruit and healthy complex carbs like oatmeal and brown rice slowly to fill out your new lifestyle of good eating.
Exercising almost daily (giving yourself a day or two off a week to rest) enough to raise your heart rate about 35-40% will make sure you're burning fat...it should be vigorous enough so that you are breathing faster but not so hard that you're gasping or can't talk.
Stick to it. Diet pills and crash diets are harmful and don't work in the long run. This isn't about a diet, this is about changing the things you eat and the amount of physical activity you do so that you can lose weight slowly and healthfully!
1-2 pounds of weight loss a week is normal and healthy.

Great question!!! I went to the doctor this past december, it turns out I have high bp, so he wanted me to lose some wieght to see if it goes down. He reccomended eating five times a day, but small portions and healthy meals. For instance have oatmeal and an orange or cup of fruit for brekfast, then before you eat lunch have somethig small like a peice of fruit or yogurt or a few carrot sticks. Then at lunch have a half of a sandwhich or wrap ( no mayonaise or mustard, just meat & veggies, maybe every so often a slice of cheese. ( just check the grams of fat per slice on the label) Then for a snack have some trail mix, or nuts ( unsalted, and just a 1/2 cup), some veggies and peanut butter (1 or 2 tablespoons) or some boiled eggs ( great protien) then for dinner just have a peice of meat and some steamed veggies or a chicken salad,or if you are a vegtarian, some cooked eggplant, or tofu and veggies. You can do a lot to spice it up. Mrs. dash ( spices) is also a very good way to spice up food with out the sodium. Remeber if you are hankering for a cookie, instead of denying yourself then binging on sweets later, just have half. Or if theres a certain night youre going out with your friends, go ahead and eat what you like, so long as day to day you are eating small healthy meals and snacks often! Goodluck! I hope it works for you, I started two weeks ago and Ive lost 5 lbs!

Power walking. And no more soda pop. I lost about 38 pounds 10 years ago that way, and have generally kept it off since - with some healthy eating and maintaining a light exercise routine.
